got bamboozled into a 4 month working contract. i worked from 10pm-3am 4 nights of week only being paid minimum wage for stocking (7.50 an hour as opposed to the average 10 an hour for that job)

its my fault for not reading the contract before signing it but by the end of the 4 months i was literally suicidal. i reached out to local unions, labor lawyers, and even the IWW because I was so desperate; in the end i suffered silently

In a word: poverty. I think if I hadn't grown up poor, I would have ended up as an American Libertarian. Just the simple fact of having been poor made me realize that a lot of the pro-Capitalist rhetoric was b.s and that most right-wing individuals were deluded. I knew from having gone to a poor school district, from being poor, that people who are poor are not that way because they are moral degenerates.

I always leaned toward the left because my mom worked in low-paid agricultural jobs when I grew up. I even voted for Mélenchon in 2012, before he was hip.
However there were multiple events that made me more radical in my beliefs : watching a TV appearance of a smart guy talking about degrowth, working with my mom a couple of times during summer, studying a bit of sociology at uni, reading the chapter of Das Kapital about M-C-M' and realizing my weed dealer was a capitalist even though what he was doing was probably more akin to M-W-M+w, reading Debord, and finally discovering this place.

A number of things, frankly. It was a long and slow process.
Acknowledging the obvious societal problems around me and being curious about the causes and mechanisms behind them. I never felt comfortable with just accepting the misery as it is, nor could I stand the usual simplistic answers lacking nuance.
I also worked a shitty job and had a brilliant union representative in conflict with a terribly incompetent local manager when economic issues caused all sort of borderline illegal "profits before quality" sort of cost-cutting by the employer.
GamerGate and even the preceding, and still ongoing, shitshows around micro-transactions and ever worsening exploitative monetization methods also ruffled my feathers towards anti-profit stances.
Frankly the last straw was Trump. I was already an regulation-supporting keynsian anticapitalist-lite at that stage. Looking at Obamas legacy, I noticed that nothing had changed. There wasn't anything significant to ruin. That put an end to all SocDemism and reformism in me.
I studied the obvious economic connections between these issues, as "bad guys corrupting a good system" was a too weak explanation on this scale.

I did suffer from some serious cognitive dissonance, as accepting the systematic issues of capitalism required heavy reorganization of my own values. The deprogramming was tough, so to say.

Probably when I learned about Communism back in the fifth grade, but I wasn't really sure of it because the school books talk about how the USSR straved their citizens and put them in gulags, so I was really hesisant to believe in it. Then, when Obama was running for re-election, I went against my gut and voted for him (I wasn't gonna vote at all, but I fell for the 47% video and voted just to "spite" Romney.) Then realizing that Obama wasn't really doing anything that was helping the people, getting mad at his drone strikes, and reading about all the shady shit the CIA and FBI did. But that really just made me anti-governemt, and it wasn't until the 2016 election that I realized how shitty our government and rulling parties were that we needed change.

The type of people the right attracts repulsed me from the start. People like Bush to corporate Gordon Gecko businessmen to bible thumpers to bigoted rednecks, these were people I knew I did not want to associate with from an early age. I started becoming more aware of politics during the Obama "Hope n Change" era and fell for the rhetoric, but the Occupy stuff was also going on around that time and I looked into things like the 1% and causes of the financial crisis. This was around middle school, then we did the communist unit in high school and I came out of it thinking Trotsky, Lenin, and Stalin were good guys who just wanted to bring forth a better world, even when they got into the kulaks and purges my thought was "eh, break a few eggs to make an omelette". I even bought a USSR flag to put on my wall and dressed like Fidel Castro for a halloween party. Now, I'm in college, and nothing has changed, although I have begun to read more literature and have developed more of a distaste for SocDem/reformism. I also like defacing Turning Point USA flyers.

i knew something was wrong with modern society and the system was to blame, i browsed Zig Forums during the election and was attracted by the supposed """anti establishment""" viewpoint. the far right could never grip me though because of their capitalist apologism, or scapegoating of DA J000S as the problem while defending the capitalist system.

I was a "muh hunan nature" 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧classical liberal🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧, but then I read a pop anthropology book and realized the human nature argument was stupid. I had a very contradictory political worldview, which included some assumptions that I wasn't willing to make, and I was very aware of that. When I eventually read Marx, I realized that I'd been conflating orthodox explanations of capitalism with capitalism itself despite being critical of people who do the same with the natural sciences. Now I'm happily on the other end of the reactionary to ☭TANKIE☭ pipeline.
I really always thought that the world needed to change fundamentally, I'd just been taught for a young age that it couldn't change in the ways leftists want it to.

If it weren't for medicare/state healthcare program, I would have probably died as a kid or my parents would have been 5-6 figures in debt to pay for the surgery. So yeah after hearing that Republicans and capitalists would rather privatize health care and see people like me dead, I really had no choice.
