Today Little Mongolia holds its parliamentary elections. It started at 04:00 AM (GMT) and ballots will close at 17:00 PM (GMT). So far record numbers have been reported, with multiple electoral districts having difficulties keeping up with the pace resulting in long queues. The governmental info-site ( valasztas.hu
On the election system, in general: Orbán's ruling coalition (Fidesz - Christian Democrats) have cooked up a system that encourages "fake parties" (parties that exist on paper only, with no political programs or real candidates) to run. For a party to become eligible it has to gather a few thousand signatures pre-elections, and naturally, large numbers of signature-copying have been reported. Most parties lacking real activists hire people paid a little sum/signatures collected. If a party becomes eligible it receives big governmental bucks that can be white-washed with clever book-keeping and lawyers. (Basically: free moneys). The result? In some districts the ballot papers are longer than 1 meter…
Fidesz's election propaganda was dominated by fear-mongering (muh Soros sends in the immigrants – ironic, since Orbán himself received higher education before the regime change thanks to the anti-communist Soros fund). Polls show that Jobbik, the extreme right party that went through a consolidation phase (aka. "cute-ifycation": from anti-EU and antisemitic sentiments to white-washed right-wing populism) is now the second largest party. Liberal parties (MSZP, LMP, Együtt, DK, etc.) are nowhere near in polls; they couldn't form a workable oppositional coalition, they remain fragmented. Hard-left parties are either insignificant (Munkáspárt [Worker's Party]: the Kádár-nostalgic gathering of pensioners) or agreed to support Liberals (Balpárt [Left Party]).
The stakes today, really, are whether Fidesz gets a 2/3 supermajority again (you actually need less than the 2/3ds of the vote to get it thanks to the refashioned system) or not. It is highly unlikely that anyone else could win.
