David Simon Spanish civil war

variety.com/2018/tv/news/the-wire-david-simon-new-series-spanish-civil-war-1202747360/

David Simon is trying to create a series on the spanish civil war. Very interesting as The wire is one of my favourite TV series.

One thing to keep in mind is that at his core he is a left wing, FDR style liberal, not an anarchist, not a socialist or communist. His depiction of the police in The wire, while complex and fascinating is still no doubt symphatetic to the police, even tho the BPD have time and time again been proven to be a despicable bunch of bastards,m with Freddie Gray and the squads who were carrying around toy guns to plant on shot victims. The wire never blamed the people but rather the bueorocracy and structures.

He will have a focus on the Abraham Lincoln brigade. Perhaps depicting the idealistic start in Madrid, the ideological diversity of the volunteer Americans and the slow decent into low intensity civil war on the republican side. My guess is he is going to put too much blame on the communists and the Soviet union and not enough on the liberals in the Republican government as he is one himself.

I'm mad at the mere idea, but still, if any American were to do this David Simon is probably the best established TV series creator who could have been chosen.

This is a quote from David Simon that makes me mildly optimistic

“when the Spanish Republic was threatened, capitalism chose tyranny. So the better men who could not abide that choice came to Spain [to fight]. Today, that same choice confronts us again.”

no (you)s yet?

Is there another thread on this or are people not interested?

Hopefully it'll be useful for us and people like Zizek for cultural theory

I can already see the cartoonishly evil Stalinists foiling every attempt by the good guys to bring democracy to Spain.

I'm afraid of this, but it ite still be good

David Simon is no Aaron Sorkin after all

The worst thing he could do is liberal anti-political pessimism

how can one make a series on a unit that did jack shit the whole war and had little actual contact with native people except when selectively exposed to them by spanish government and then when their mettle is tested actually they get btfo and obliterated by the enemy. I'd support the republican side still, but common this unit was pathetic as fuck

lmao so they should make a series of the unit in the civil war which was the most elite, the navy seals of the republican side lol

the depiction of actual combat would hardly be the most interesting part of a series like this

It's going to be fucking awful. The Wire is copaganda, David Simon is a capitalism-loving, cop-loving liberal. Now he's going to do anti-communist propaganda focusing on the Spanish civil war. It's 100% guaranteed to be anti-communist propaganda. Bonus: "Join Roj*va!!!"

YOU COULD HAVE STOPPED THIS
YOU ONLY HAD TO HEED MY WARNINGS

Half of the cops are psychos with a badge who did more damage than the criminals. The best of them is a coward and who decided to legalize drugs right before his pension creating hell on earth but managing to keep some zones of the cities clean. The detectives are self destructive alcoholics that when are used by federals and politicians to bust unions or chase criminals just for the thrill of chasing something.
The only 2 shots fired by police are friendly fire. Other achievements of the police in the show are managing to get a teenager informant killed, a partially innocent drug dealer 20 years, destroying a union, killing a union leader, legalizing drugs, making the identity of a teenage informant public, causing a drug addict to kill one of his firends and faking a serial killer to catch a drug kingpin who escapes becase this whole serial killer things was actually used by carrierst to progress. In the third season is explicitly said that cop should be community watchers and nothing else, in the fourth season when they try to follow the money they get cockblocked. Also they were doing this mostly for the lulz not because they cared about something bigger. Most of the cop protagonist objective is to piss off the bosses more than cleaning the city.
Call this show pro cop.

This is what was wrong with the show, in a sense. What made The Wire such a circlejerk of liberal faggotry is that in spite of its willingness to shirk political correctness, it is driven by the same anti left sentiment: the system is good and correct, so people must be the problem. The show was about taking pity on the poor wretched fools that don't know what is good for them.
Any leftist worth his salt knows that it would be completely insane if the enforcing arm of the ruling class wasn't a safe space for petty sociopaths. This is only shocking to Americans because they live in a fantasy world.

Americans don't even deserve good television

The anarchists and communists will be completely misrepresented.

They'll have the anarchists appear in a good light and the communists be evil, tyrannical and monstrous. Anarchists are liberals so they get the thumbs up from the US.

Did you even watch the show man? It's true that it was co opted by liberals, but doesn't mean is a liberal show. "the game is rigged man" is one of the most famous line of the show.
The fourth season is spent literally on the school system and how the school system is more interested in having money from the "no child left behind program" than in education. In this world, the schools are just training for the streets.
Not true. The only character who tries to do something different, first to create a drug free zone to liberate some zones from violence and second making that zones access to social programs (who were nearly cockblocked by burocracy) is cucked by a cop who just wants to smack heads.
In the later season the same guy tries to make a school program suited for streets childs but gets cucked by the mayor who cannot a accept a loan from another candidate because this means his Carrer dying. Most of the time the shows says explicitly that most of the wretched are talented or good hearted, these get fucked by the system.
The show says this numerous time. It's always the carrerist, sociopath oppurtunist who wins and it's always the self destructive, sociopathic cop who is "natural police".

No it isn't marxist tv, nor is commie. But it's class conscious as fuck.
Also it's pretty realistic, i don't think gangbangers who grow up in the streets know marx.

I won't pretend my opinions are objective facts, but I think you are giving the show too much credit. Liberals love vaguely revolutionary themes in fiction because it's cathartic for pussies that are unwilling to demand radical change in real politics.
There is a difference between interpretation and the intended meaning of a work. Fahrenheit 451, for example, is usually considered an important story about censorship even though Ray Bradbury was just whining about television.

So because liberals can like it, you can't?
The worst interpretations of this show are made by liberals, from a marxist prospective this show is class conscious. Not revolutionary but class conscious. You are forcing the liberal point of view here for no reason.
Also the interpretation of the author shouldn't be universal.

I was only agreeing that we should be skeptical of anything the show's creator will release in the future. Creative intent is not defining, but still important for critical analysis.

I agree on this tbh. Treme was liberal bullshit. I don't expect anything else from this one on katalonia. Still the wire was goat

Who are you quoting?
If you read my post you'd understand that any story about them would be entirely fictional because the brigade had little involvement in spanish politics, combat or with average civvies. That can hardly be interesting when the Civil War itself should be front and center, not the doings of a detached foreign contingent of idealistic redlibs and self-styled communists who have no actual clue whats going on and who're culturally and historical illiterate burgers to boot.

Infantile.

Idiot

Treme was much less political, its antrophology. There are political elements ofc but its not the main point.

Its just a show about how creative New Orleans piipo get fucked by the system but their lives still go on as usual. Does the fact that it deals with creative and lazy people and culture automatically make it "liberal". Is liking culture a liberal trait?

Also, while we are at it, lets deal with the essential question of our time.

Was Stringer Bell a pseud??

Nothing new to me. The worst would actually be if they start implying like the rest of the """democracies""" didn't completely ditch Spain.

This is so far off from what I got from it. Are you sure you even watched it?

No, I was just joking. I honestly was expecting something politically charged as the wire tho.

I mean, I can't understand how people can call this show liberal when also one of the main themes is that people can never escape the role society preset for them, never move up the ladder and never escape the class in which they were born.

the writer of The Wire, David Simon, is a Clinton-loving, cop-loving liberal. you are fucking deluded, and you are a liberal too.

lol

And frank capra was an anti communist christian who made a movie that was nearly banned for being too commie.
You are an idiot, bet my hand you didn't even watched the fucking show.

Britain let German aircraft violate Gibraltar's airspace, which in turn made the airlift of Franco's army possible. Their navy blockade facilitated the fascists too. They'll never show this.

watched all 5 seasons, enjoyed them, but I admit that they are copaganda.
