Americans liberals have turned populist into a scary slur post-Trump, like "white working class".

The media has manufactured a sort of political culture with a lot of stupid unwritten rules that politicians are to follow otherwise they're not allowed in the Big Club. One of those unwritten rules is that you can't point because pointing is aggressive or something; that's why most politicians do the Clinton Thumb when they talk even though no actual human being actually does the Clinton Thumb unless they work in politics. So when there's a politician they want to portray as a populist rabblerouser, they show pictures of him pointing and breaking away from other political norms. Look at the pictures any anti-Corbyn tabloid.

"Populist" basically means a leader that the US doesn't like but is reasonably popular at home. It goes way back to Chavez' times.

I don't think there's any mass studies on it, but it's one of those dumb things that happens so frequently that you can't not notice if you pay attention to political spectacle for long enough, so it's highlighted in satire and observational comedy. And they're essentially right - GOP's positions put them in a poor place to win people over, as the DNC has had the same economic platforms since the '90s but without the racism, xenophobia, or (as much) willingness to be the face of various authoritarian 'security' powergrabs. On every level, the GOP's approach to democracy as it exists is to bypass it as much as possible - gerrymandering, reliance on only the EC in every presidential election, claiming voter fraud and refusing to offer evidence, claiming machine tampering and then refusing (to security advocates' disappointment) to actually do anything about it, calling for recounts every time they lose and then blocking opposition recounts… the Dems would probably have a majority in congress right now if they weren't such pussies and had reasonable strategy wrt funding.

You got it the wrong way, his party tried to appeal to catholics because he wants to appeal to a wider audience and they are spooked by leftists who in Mexico are traditionally very anti-church and anti-religion in general.
His previous party has had many very public feuds with the catholic church, which still rules in the rural south.

Consider for a second that the Bush admin (also markedly authoritarian) was also investigated, and Trump just pardoned their fall guy. I think it's a valid point that the executive branch is supposed to be accountable - visibly denying that in such an egregious manner while pretty much readily shitting on (or denying the existence of) popular opinion at every turn is pretty damning. And it pisses people off who aren't really 'leftists' - which, is something Antifa has gotten right in the past year, being willing to acknowledge that a corrupt and unaccountable government with zero regard for its subjects generally makes people mad and offers an opportunity to champion ideology.
