Obious polyp but the Bajorans are meant to be the Polish/Lithuanians and the Cardassian union is the USSR.
Also DS9 was really quite topical, it tries to touch on the 1990s race relations in areas like LA and then on the nature of the relation between the church and the state. I mean there is legit a 'creationism vs evolution' episode.

The writers themselves have stated that the Bajorian-Cardassion issue is literally based on Nazi Germany and the Jews, the entire Cardassian architecture is based on fascist/Nazi design, Gul Dukat has many traits shared with narcisstic Nazi gouverneurs like Arthur Seyß-Inquart. If you don't recognize the parallels between Israel and the Bajorans that are hammered down constantly I can't help you. That episode I was talking about was literally their own inteprrstion of Man in the Glass Booth which was also admitted by the writers.

The Federation was a post-scarcity society with a representative, democratic government.
Anything beyond that, including an identification as Socialist seems to be rather shaky ground to me.

I mean, just look at what he did regarding the 'lyrics' for the original Star Trek theme.
I love that in the end, both Quark and Eddington were right.
The Federation is basically a friendly, diplomatic version of the Borg; With even the Ferengi being on the path towards eventual assimilation into the Federation by the end of DS9.
I cannot think of another show that was so consistently able to show the main charterers being on the wrong/not entirely correct side of an issue; Homefront/Paradise Lost being another good example of this.
What an absolute gem of a show.
