Primaries happen over the next two weeks. Democrats might elect candidates based on their gun control position putting themselves at a disadvantage in November.

Case in point: the PA assembly candidate who burned an AR-15 with gasoline in a video. That sort of activity is like poison to independent voters, especially ones who are skeptical about Democrats in the first place and narrowly voted for Trump in the last election. Admittedly he's just one person but this sort of shit gets blown up and made into the party's casus belli which confirms every stereotype Republicans label Democrats with, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.

And again this happens less than 24 hours after Democrats score a major victory in passing a Senate NN bill, forcing a House vote that would otherwise prove decisive (either it gets rejected and becomes a campaign issue or it's sent to Trump for a signature).

The problem with your logic is that it implies independents are going to vote in the first place. Republicans are polling terribly with independents, meaning it's more likely they'll stay home than vote GOP.

"Independent" is American for "Progressive" which is NuSpek for "Social Democrat."

Midterms tend to have lower turnout in general, which favors Republicans as the average voting age is slightly higher than normal. I see no reason why this won't happen in 2018, especially when Trump is being Israel's best friend forever like older voters demand he does. Democrats can of course push back with labor, min wage increases, and single payer but those policies are drowned out by the media's 24/7 fixation on guns, the president's prostitutes, and Iran.
