A lot of them were well meaning idealists who wanted to form a country that properly implemented sharia law. I see nothing wrong with that in principle, and I'm glad they tried it in Muslim lands rather than in Europe. I would suggest that to many it was never obvious from the start that it would turn in to a nightmare. Kind of like Israel in microcosm.
