Over all it's been the opposite worldwide. In the 1800s, there were states in the US where 10 was the age of consent. I think Delaware was lower. AoCs raised in the 20th century (and a few in the 21st, at the same time that homosexuality was still just being legalized in parts of the first world), the middle east moved to shun pederastic traditions, etc. and the shit guys like Jimmy Paige and David Bowie did in the '70s would not be defended today. It seems what one wants from age of consent law is to maximize available pleasure whole minimizing harm. I feel a system based around age ranges is superior: even a five year old experimenting with another 5 year old seems to hold no extreme danger, however, a 5 year old and an 18 year old or adult seems extremely prone to abuse. Thereby I'd argue that any sexual encounter within a year or two age range should be fine but extreme gaps involving children and adults should obviously be made illegal.
