Ageism

It seems like we've had every conversation on varying social issues except this one. Do we live in an ageist society? I remember reading an article by Workers World and they pointed that the young and the elderly really experience the most ageism.

I see a lot of boomer hate on here sometimes, and in some respects, I get it, there are very nasty assholish old people out there. But part of what I learned in the service industry is how someone treats you has a lot to do with their class; the guy whose got a golden retirement is probably going to walk-in like he owns the place, ask if you'll go check the back for a product, cuss you out, and call a manager if you can't find it.It seems to me that working class elderly are less prone to this tendency much like the working class in general.

I feel for elderly workers, you do forty years or more working in this shit society and all you get is some politician or CEO saying you don't really deserve to retire. Some elderly people are also more radical than you might think.

I'm not sure I have the answers here but I wanted to get Zig Forums's thoughts on the matter. After all, whenever the lay-offs start its always the young and the old who get the axe first…

I think the "boomer hate" comes down to boomers have consumed so much anti-communist propaganda that they're seen as an obstacle for organization and the reason a lot of awful awful policies get implemented. That's not to say they're to blame, just that as a consequence of their indoctrination they -can- be an obstacle. Though the general secretary of the party I'm in is 71 years old and a lifelong communist so it gives me some hope

This is actually a rather interesting topic. In my own hometown, a whole host of old (and effective) municipal administrators were offered lucrative packages to incentivize retirement, making way for a slew of inexperienced (and thus pliable) young graduates. They themselves will be victims once the mayor and his cronies find them inconvenient.

IMO, nobody should have to work past age sixty in the current state of medicine. Those that do ought to be there voluntarily.

Maybe? This is sweeping under the barrel levels of looking for problems in society.

What does Zig Forums think of life extension and curing aging?

curing death should be one of the premire socalist projects once WORLDWIDE_CYBERNETIC_SOCALISM is established

Humans the worst animal on this planet. I consider it counter-productive to focus on extending the lifespan of a parasite.

This is a serious issue to me, and one I've brought up.

And, yeah. We do.

America in particular puts a lot of stuff down to age that just isn't age stuff. Looking for work growing up where I am was a nightmare - even after the recession ended, it was a bitch and then my first job interview I got thrown out 'cuz it was a bar and they hadn't done the math when they looked at my application. Some places are less gung-ho about that, but the fact that places in the US exist where this entire area of the market can be walled off until you turn 21 is ridiculous. And for that matter, raising the drinking age wasn't even necessary - the UK and Canada lowered their drunk driving deaths without having to raise the age, and now rather than solving the problem the US's dui fatalities just peak after 21. In the most literal sense of the word, it's retarded - it delays it a couple years.

The trend right now is to use brain growth as kind of an explain-all - the brain generally continues to grow until like 24 or 25. Ok. But that was presumably true 100 odd years ago, yet now it's used to explain NEETs and young adults who collect action figures or don't have jobs. You can't look at contemporary phenomena and broad cultural changes and then point to something that's been the same the entire time.

If it goes even further, we could eventually reach a point where people are saying "well, sex hormone levels don't drop until like 29, so everyone below 30 is just naturally adolescent." That's not it. People are denied experience, and the market wants more dumb children to sell useless colorful shit to. More debt, more consumerism, more unemployment - a win/win in the eyes of some.

Youngs > Boomers
Tbh

The cult of youth in mass media will be destroyed once collective ownership is established.

tbd?

Has anyone experienced this with kids? My friend's little brother has roamed wild thanks to a combination of divorced working class parents and the internet. He's turned out very strange (no value judgement), and makes claims about people discriminating against children. I think he's forming a critique of the peremptory parent-child relationships surrounding him.

Of course people discriminate against children. They are fucking stupid as shit. They are lucky that they are so cute.

Anti-Natal Gang Unite

I did this as a kid, too - I remember when I read about the Patriot Act wiretapping a half a year before the NYT "revealed" it. And I'd been talking about it all along, damnit, and only like a year later were all these people freaked out!

But then I also talked about NWO alien shit at the time. Some of my sources were better than others.

At what point in your life did you start thinking yourself to be a parasite?

ftfy

Except that they aren't. Yeah they're limited by their undeveloped minds, but they can still understand more than you'd expect (or at least more than I expected). He's ten and already has a solid foundation in electrical engineering, mandarin, and french. He also regularly criticizes public education, jingoism, and heteronormativity, amongst other things. I know you were mainly memeing, but they aren't (always) stupid. See

Sounds like we could've been friends user. I always liked people such as yourself, even if I was a Christian fundie who was years behind you.

Perhaps… but at the same time adults use this as an excuse to dismiss EVERYTHING they say out of hand. A lot of adults, first of all, are stupid as shit outside their job competencies. A lot have stupid as shit opinions. To take my own childhood experiences, on the other hand, whenever I tried to articulate my thoughts, personal fears for the future, feelings or other ideas to my parents they almost always belittled them or patronizingly said that "you'll figure it out when you're an adult". Obviously you can dismiss it as my parents being shit or being too tired after their work responsibilities, but I'm sure other people experienced this in their younger years. Saying kids are simple, stupid or unknowledgeable, as I see it, is just an easy way to dismiss their wants and needs and force them into these utterly two-dimensional roles as dependents of their parents. I believe its a self-fulfilling prophecy and makes it easier to assimilate into capitalism and accept unwittingly authoritarian directives of hierarchies, whether parents or from the educational system.

This society really shits on older people who didn't win all the success they were promised when they were young, and it's in the process of really shitting on millennials when they hit 50, 60. I don't believe it's a conscious process of ageism so much though, the way blacks and women are consciously and deliberately targeted for discrimination.

Children are a case of people who, generally, aren't capable of functioning the way an adult can, but how this society treats children is shit on its own and actively detrimental to childrens' development. I do think that delaying adulthood to age 18 or later in some cases is bullshit and unnecessary infantilization of people. In any case though I'm not seeing the same kind of bullshit that is heaped on older people for example in the job marketplace; the plight of the current generation of young 'uns is mostly because the rulers have given up finding jobs for people and are gearing up for exterminism.

I was a gross, uptight prick as a child for the most part tbh.

nobody said that children can't have good or bad personality traits. the thing is though that emotional "development" isn't an inevitable trajectory toward goodness. Perhaps (you), for a variety of factors, had negative personal traits as a child and ended up a well-adjusted adult with "good" characteristics, but another person might as well end up having no change at all or move in the opposite direction as you. This doesn't somehow nullilfy what that user said- this is all just to say that childhood isn't inherently this or that and a lot of what is said about it is extremely biased, speculative and shaped by present circumstances.
I mean, isn't it funny that "adolescence" as a concept only came into notice by some german psychologist a century ago? Isn't is further strange that our so-called experts are now telling us that adolescence now ends around 25? Maybe, just maybe, our brains take on a certain structure in certain conditions, and the changing nature of post-industrial and modern society is extending behaviors and lifestyles once considered "adolescent" into adulthood?

...

Ageism is difficult because, while a lot of age discrimination is unfair, age isn't a spook like race or ethnicity. It has significant biological implications that are hard to ignore.

Under cybernetic socialism everything is connected and nothing capitalized.

Dying no matter what happens to me or what i do is a pretty comforting thought
Immortality not so much

What about people who openly criticize and discriminate short mrn?

Oh, I basically agree - other guy just complimented me and I had to get in that self-deprecation.

I actually consider adolescence valid in the sense that there's still some secondary (or tertiary?) sexual development going on then - but it's definitely not childhood, and sexual maturity seems to be the only hard logical line between childhood and adulthood as constructs.

You die twice and the rest is superfluous. Once when you reach 22 and the second time when you reach 35.

I don't give a shit about post-35 geriatrics, you had your chance to get your life together. It's time for the youth.

There is extreme ageism in neoliberalism due to employers wanting to keep "experienced" employees at all costs, meaning they will almost never hire a post college graduate and will instead search for an old guy. This happens in most engineering companies where they keep 50-70 year old guys and barely hire anyone else, no matter how competent they are. Also, minwage employers also prefer to hire boomers rather than young people. Of all the new job openings in the US last year, like 90% of them were hiring people 45 and up.

You'll probably be singing a different tune when you pass that point and you still don't have your life "together". It's capitalism that oppresses youth not the elderly.

Many silicon valley have rampant problems with ageism and rarely even consider anyone over 30:
marketwatch.com/story/silicon-valley-has-an-age-problem-2017-09-26

I doubt this is true but even if this was, consider this: half of all new jobs created in the US goes to immigrants, does this mean that immigrants don't face struggles or discrimination against them is okay?

Since Im nazbol and I live in eastern europe, I dont.

This is even worse, and exposes how disgusting globalist capitalism is towards the working class.

You're cherrypicking software millenial lovechild companies. What about other engineering companies, like Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, GE, Medical intrument manufacturers, etc.

its mostly early boomer age women

Kind of hard to do anything radical when old people/boomers will oppose you…….
Boomers in my country are fine with increased surveillance because they are fine with being safe, they will bootlick cops and politicians every time and they are in favor of privatization of everything, even libraries now. These people have no revolutionary potential and care too much for their own safety and their children to sacrifice themselves for anything other than protesting dumb spectacles on Facebook……….
I know there are many argument to be against ageism, and there are many proletariat older people who are humble and knowledgeable about the world. But I have heard too many liberal and pro-capitalist older people telling me that I need to learn to code and have excuses for every injustice of capitalism that at this point I just don't care about them so much……….
Also I study in STEM/tech and I hate the young techlibertarians just as much I think, so it's maybe not an age thing after alll……….

They are probably 12 and just found out the word boomer.

This is a load of nonsense.A lot of creative types hit their stride past 35, despite the meme that everything happens before then

When I had parents that fucked up royally it made me really bitter and hate children and families. I also was on the internet since I was 11, but I didn't have it before then cuz being a poor shit in the middle of nowhere, not rare to take til 2003 to get the web. He may change his attitude as he gets older.

Also, people do tend to forget what it was like to be younger and can be pretty condescending to children, and they are prone to being manipulated by others more easily.

"Boomers" are the generation born just after world war 2, you fucking spastic. No "boomer" is thirty years old.

Never gunna make it.

Pokemon GO kill yourself, you sad mouth breathing waste of chromosomes. Your memes are degenerating day by day just like your brain. If a 6 year old drew that it wouldnt even qualify a place in the refridgerator door.
