Killing and imprisoning everyone that disagreed with them
They organized around a newspaper. The newspaper was a form of organizational activity that could be carried out in any situation, repression, lulls, mass protests, and so on. It functioned as an impetus to build a massive intelligence apparatus. It got the Bolsheviks connected with workers and struggles all over Russia. It solidified party stances and theory and got everyone on the same page. It trained the Bolsheviks in secrecy and smuggling.
Aside from that, they simply had correct stances on everything, worked hard, and agitated like hell.
Read WITBD and LWC to get an idea of what they did.
Also
The Russian Empire imploded under the weight of its own totalitarianism, women workers rioted and got the army to join them when the socialist liberal government run by Kautsky continued to dump Russians into an unpopular war.
The Bolsheviks benefited both from being in the right place at the right time, having a functioning party structure with which to capitalize on instability and direct worker action, and a little help from the German Empire bringing Lenin back to Russia where he was able to directly guide party activities.
Most of it had to do with the fact that he Russian Empire was a failed state by 1917. No amount of clever organizing or brilliant praxis can make up for the presence of proper economic and political conditions for revolution, which is typically far outside our control.
