Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has revealed that he actually wanted Donald Trump to win the 2016 US presidential election. Russia, however, did not contribute to Trump’s win by any means, he insisted.
“Yes, I wanted him to win, because he talked about the need to normalize US-Russia ties,” Putin said, answering a direct question from a journalist during the joint press conference with Donald Trump following the Helsinki summit.
The Russian president left the second part of the question unanswered, however, regarding whether he “instructed” his officials to help Trump, since he had discussed the allegations of meddling earlier during the press conference.
“Russia did not interfere and is not going to interfere into American domestic affairs,” Putin stated, adding that this point had been made repeatedly. Moscow was ready to participate in a joint investigation with the US of the any such allegations, however, if any real evidence was presented, the Russian leader said. Such work could be conducted by a joint Russian-US cybersecurity group, the idea of which was floated by Putin during his last meeting with Trump in Hamburg.

Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov insists that the Russian leader is pragmatic enough to accept Donald Trump placing US national interests above all else but, to build a mutually beneficial relationship, he expects his counterpart to respect Russia. “This is what we hope to achieve at this summit. We hope this will be a baby step towards overcoming the current critical situation in our bilateral relations,” Peskov told RT.
The eyes of the world are on the Finnish capital, where the leaders of the two world powers are due to meet later on Monday. A day earlier, Trump stressed that he was going into the meeting with “low expectations,” adding that “nothing bad is going to come out of it and maybe some good will come out of it.” He later tweeted that even if he were granted Moscow as retribution, his critics would say it’s not good enough.

"Election meddling" to some extent is something that practically all great powers engage in. Is it bad? Sure, but the United States is the last nation that should be getting on its high horse about interfering in the democratic process of any foreign nation. Neither or them ever came out to defend Putin from America's alphabet agencies or give Putin's claims equal weight with those of said agencies. To my knowledge, neither of them ever accepted direct campaign info from Russian officials (Don Jr. did this, lied about it, then outed himself - either because he's just that dumb or to throw people off something that could be even worse). Also, their actual relations with Putin were pretty troubled but the US and Russia have never totally cut the ties that came with the fall of the USSR - whenever Putin annexes something or the US funds proxies against Russia's allies, we're still sharing a space station.
IE, it was public diplomacy, and unless you can find some instance where Bush defends Putin from the CIA, I don't think we're talking about the same thing, and if we are then I would have assumed you were aware of the difference. This absolves Bush and Clinton of nothing - as of yet, Trump is still working on managing to hit Bush-tier lows (killing NN was a start) considering one of Bush's two foreign wars hasn't even ended yet.

I could try writing something like that, but it would probably take a lot more research. I am sure that a historical materialist explanation can be made though. Something like, the increased exploration of the working class, especially in the rust belt lead to increasing rage. However, they did not know where to direct that rage. Trump provided an answer to this by blaming a foreign "Other" that had somehow infected society. By removing this foreign "Other" and returning to the "good old days", things would be improved. That message resonated with people, so they voted for him. When you think about it, it is a very similar explanation to the rise of Hilter in Germany. Luckily for us Trump isn't clever enough to pull off a full fascist coup. He is half assing his fascism. But even a half assed fascism is still dangerous.

The gap was a surge of Stein voters - the Green Party reliably getting fewer votes as in every election, and the Democrats later trying to claim that those were "their votes" (how dare Stein take them!1) in spite of their shitty candidate. The GOP is a constant, Trump gained some Bernie voters with actual economic talk, though - protectionism, vocal opposition to the TPP, some talking to unions, and that thing he said once about cracking down on untaxed income among the wealthy. Before the election there actually was some appeal beyond the shit about the wall. He was reactionary, yeah, but he was otherwise closer to a populist than any candidate the GOP had produced - I think about what it would sound like if Palin talked about "solutions" to poor industrial growth, and I think it'd be hilarious. But the more decisive split may have been between Dems and Greens.

Saw Trump's speech. I'm kinda baffled and pleased, to be honest. I have absolutely nothing to complain about it. Also all Hillary type (neo)liberal (SPIEGEL) and neocon/reactionary (Springer) mainstream journalists here in Germany are fuming that Trump is apparently seeking to deescalate tensions with the Russians rather than pushing for more conflict and ultimately war like Obama/Hillary and their ilk before. That's because Trump isn't doing anything outside of optics. The diplomatic chill and shifting military outlook are beyond his control even if he was a competent political actor. The US is still shipping weapons to the Ukraine, levying heavy sanctions against Russia, and continuing the military build up along the borderlands. This is even reflected in the Pentagon's shifting geostrategic outlook evidenced by their empahasis on great power containment and competition as the emerging central challenge for the military in their latest National Defense Strategy report which is a major shift in emphasis away from the waning forever-War on Terror. This is the new long war.

I've noticed this when I listen to Trump's speeches, they are often not as bad as the MSM portrays them. Like, they completely distort what he actually said. He still says a lot of shitty stuff about immigrants and tax breaks for the rich, but when he is talking geopolitics he's not NEARLY as bad as the MSM makes him out to be. You got so much second-hand information about Trump and it always surprises me how much of it is straight-up bullshit. Don't get me wrong, if the media was this harsh on every US president I'd be okay with it, but they really just do this to Trump and that pisses me off so much.
It just looks like he doesn't follow up on what he says, whether or not he is himself to blame for it or his entourage, we will never know.

One of the funny things is the way he talks. If you read a transcript of him riffing it's completely incoherent and makes no grammatical sense. If you listen to him, he constantly stops and starts incomplete sentences and you can tell by context and inflection what his general idea is (so he doesn't feel the need to finish). Obviously that means people will read into the speech what they want to hear to a certain degree (common thing for manipulative people to do), but less obviously it means that it's basically impossible to repeat what he said without playing the audio (and video for good measure to get his effete gestures). This would make it easy to misinterpret or outright misrepresent what he was getting at, because (especially if it's just a transcript) what he says is borderline rorschach test.
