I'm serious, someone genuinely told me that story around the first time i came here.
What is 5000 talers worth in Euros today? Surely he could get a nice gaming / youtube setup?
I found somebody claiming 450 talers would be equal to about $325 around 1840, and then suggesting $325 in 1840 would be $30,000 today. Which I think would put 5,000 talers at $300,000+.
So the jewish nigger Lassale lost another third of a million today on his feeble speculative ventures.
It's pretty much impossible to directly translate value this way through time. Better would simply be to say that $325 at $0.75-$1.0 would equal around one year of unskilled labour at 12 hours/day.
According to the interwebz a Thaler contains .536 Troy ounces of silver. If you multiply 5,000 by that figure you get around 2600 Troy ounces of silver. The going price for a Troy ounce of silver is $15.71. Therefore, the least possible value of 5,000 Thalers is over 42,000 dollars.
