Marx’s father’s birth name was Herschel Levi Mordechai, but he changed his name to Heinrich Marx when he converted to Lutheranism before Marx was born so he could practice law in Prussia (and he never really gave a shit about Judaism). So, “Mordechai” would have been Marx’s surname had his father not converted a couple years before his birth. Anti-communist Nazis like to refer to Marx as Mordechai because it highlights his ethnic Jewish ancestry, though I don’t believe it was ever actually his name.
