Why isn't the broom used in socialist symbolism more often? I feel like it has potential as a good anti-establishment, pro-proletarian symbol, not to mention the nicknames. "The Sweepers".
Any other good obscure or possible symbols that could appeal to people IRL?
i was actually wondering, it's the hammer and the sicle still relevant as a symbol for the proletariat?
Benjamin James
It isn't too uncommon but I really love the cog. It has a really nice aesthetic and pairs really well with hammers, it simply look badass imo
Maybe nowadays it isn't that relevant but the history it has attached to it will make it immortal.
Asher Hughes
I think it really depends where you’re operating from. For example I’m an American and I don’t think using the hammer and sickle is a good strategy for winning people over. Too much baggage and ultimately it’s substance > style that’s important, though I wouldn’t deny symbolism can have potent effects. I think the classic red flag is viable almost anywhere, though
Noah Gray
In the global south though, I think hammer and sickle is still relevant.
North Korea has that Hammer+Sickle+Paint brush. Are you thinking of something similar, but with a broom?
Grayson Rogers
A political party in India called 'Aam Aadmi Party' (literally, Common Man Party; think of Labor party/socdems) uses broom as a symbol to symbolise sweeping out corruption in Indian politics.
Owen Gomez
It's a hoe instead of a sickle though
Austin Hughes
Apologies, thanks for the correction.
Colton Fisher
No problem man, speaking of imo the Juche symbol is easily one of the most beautiful and aesthetic socialist symbols out there, regardless of me disagreeing with some elements of the Juche ideology.
I unironically support the association of communism with cats, because what do cats do? They hunt rats. And who has the value of a rat? The bourgeoisie.
I agree. I forgot what was the movement named but it used iirc a Kalashnikov as one of its symbols but still the Juche symbol is more meaningful and that too to a larger group of the population compared to Kalashnikov.
I vote for octopuses, they have been used for capitalists, communists, jews and any other spooky figures in history, i just think it's cool to try to appropriate such a demonized symbol.
What other animals do you think can be symbolized, if at all, as having proletarian nature – having camaraderie, hunting animals considered vile?
Jackson Robinson
Also I remember I first read here how this bird kills snakes by stepping on them. Like poetry isn't it? If one of you fine talented gentlemen could make a flag out of this (something like the bird and snake being yellow with a red background) that would be hella tight.
I mean, it's true, at least i remember seeing two political cartoons of octopuses with stars of david and jew caricatures.
Nathan Morris
I don't mind an octopus but it has to look intimidating, not like that fat thing. Also isn't it funny how rightwingers end up making commies seem badass with their usual attempts at propaganda? The red skellies don't lie.
Adam Morgan
Like this? But not an eagle (because I've seen bald eagle opted by right-wingers in America, am unaware of context)
Nice. How about three dominoes, each one of them representing the three stages of a People's War as Mao theorized: 1. Strategic defensive 2. Strategic stalemate 3. Strategic offensive And since it is dominoes, the completion of all these three stages is inevitable – this symbolizes the strength of the proletariat lead by the party
Gabriel Jenkins
here ya go, also another anticommunist one that proves your point plus also bear looks spoopy(progress and civilization look hot as fuck)
No, as in that same pic I posted but made into a flag. Like a typical Gadsen flag but with the bird about to crush the snake. That would look really nice imo. And yeah can't really be a bald eagle, it's pretty much recognized by everyone as a nationalist american symbol.
Eli Walker
tfw Zig Forums is synthesizing new proletarian symbolism as we speak by coopting right-wing fears and applying new meaning
I mean it is kinda serene looking but it still looks great imo. Its pose is elegant, almost beautiful, as would be an uprising of the proletariat against the capitalist snakes. Serene but fierce and ultimately victorious, cause we know the bird will end up killing the snake.
Holy shit love that analysis, a flag like that would look dope af.
Isaac Edwards
wew
Connor Scott
Thanks but just got to know its nothing new.
Not an artist, but you might want to start a thread about your bird-kill-snake or request leftVexillology to make one.
Nathan Ross
A flag that looks like the sun first appearing over the horizon. The night is ending (millennia of exploitative class societies) and a new day is has begun.
Tbh I was hoping someone from here would be able to do it, I know we have a few people here talented with photoshop, might give it a try myself if I want to later, don't really feel like making a reddit account just for that. The thing is I remember someone suggesting it as a flag a few months ago and I think it'd look really nice if someone actually made it.
Jack Ramirez
If you have a software that can work on an image and have multiple layers too, how about beginning with tracing an outline over that pic you posted? Make a flat art out of it? Like that anarcho-syndie cat I posted?
Adam Garcia
Spartacus has always been based but I fear he’s been commodified too much by the entertainment industry. Seriously search “Spartacus” and it’s 99% movie garbage. Marx called him a proletarian hero
Size representing the power of proletariat in today's reactionary world.
James Turner
I always thought that waves could be used for good symbolism Something about one drop of water being nothing but a couple million drops being an unstoppable force, very collectivist
isn't it also imagery in animes where when the hero takes a pledge then they are shown on a high rock and waves strike the rock? Can't find relevant pic
Don't have any image-editing software as of now, but is that possible with photoshop? Or gimp?
Elijah Nguyen
Yes with photoshop GIMP afaik will make raster images For vector images so that you can scale it whatever size you want checkout Inkscape (open source) Both have layers-option (every graphics editor has to have that)
To add to this, "Lenin likes cats and fucks the fat cats"
Samuel Morales
Shut the fuck up imperialists
David Stewart
The three pointed star. Symbolism based on animals, tools, or materials have the drawback that they eventually become dated and lose meaning as work becomes more diversified, and symbols like the red star is known by everyone who has a basic knowledge of communist symbols. The three pointed star has timeless meaning and imagery, signifies a transcending from symbology grounded in literal present things towards a new conceptual future, and is not as overused as other communist imagery. It can be changed to mean a multitude of things, most notably in the current age the idea of a new united movement and front.
I'm of the opinion that eventually, a spade is going to be called a spade, and a communist a communist. Eventually, the new trendy symbol for nu-american communism will be called for what it is (or should be) and the new symbol will be not only associated with the hammer and sickle, but also with deception. Rather reinvigorate the H&S, bring to it the love of the working class.
Carson Baker
I agree but it is also a matter of how meanings are passed onto the next gen. If not with tools, think of animals or heart. In many cultures, certain animal or human symbols have remained for more than a few centuries.
Can you explain this part a little?
so can other shapes, no?
Cameron Perez
Boring. And shitty colours too. At best, that arrow promises some vague notion of progress that could just as easily be used by liberal utopian capitalists.
Adrian Hernandez
Talking about symbolism, what does the soviet red star means for you? i personally prefer the idea that it represents the red army protecting the workers, thus why the star encapsulates the hammer and the sickle.
Ayden Robinson
Exactly this, but iirc it is the vanguard not the red army
Thomas Foster
could be thought of those kid-feel-good thing that your granpa is a star watching you from the sky
but no
Hunter Baker
I'm thinking about using the broom as a symbol for cleanup squads that go out and remove Nazi flyers, stickers, etc. Like happy antifascist janitors. What communist symbolism has generally been really good at is an attitude that's simultaneously aggressive and optimistic; with a lot of roll-up-your-sleeves and get-to-work gumption. D*SA for whatever you think of them is good at this. I think the new Chicago D*SA logo is great because it's this happy-looking train car that's about to run you over.
I'm also a big cog fan. I personally rock the cog on Twitter.
Saw a dude with a Juche shirt at a demo and he had the most "do not fuck with me" look on the street. It certainly made an impression.
This, does anyone have that Hitler quote where he said he chose red specifically to attract socialists?
Kevin Martin
I assume he means dead grandpa, not living. Though I only ever got the regular "so and so is now in heaven".
Cameron Brown
Plain red flag is best. Get your comrades together for a street march, wearing red and flying a bunch of red flags and raising one hell of a ruckus is a lot of fun.
Elijah Scott
I suppose it would depend on where you live and the culture the movement originates from. I believe symbolism that that is not a used as often (and so separated to a degree from the movements of before in the public eye) or breaks all prior conventions and invokes the idea of new society without directly saying so is sorely needed. People are desperately looking for an answer, some destination to build towards that will resolve the confusion inherent in capitalism today. We must do as communists and revolutionaries before us and break through the haze that encapsulates society, forming imagery that is entirely new and original, or at the very least unfamiliar enough that it differentiates us from all the other movements that the proletariat of society have become disillusioned in. Yes they can, the three pointed star was merely one suggestion.
Green is a good color, shut your trap. Its grounded while at the same time implying some idea of technology, "nature", or the future.
The serpent it's the immortal symbol, there's a reason the dragon myth arrived in completely different cultures. We need to appropiate it.
Nathaniel Turner
And red symbolizes the blood sacrificed by the proletarians in the revolution. Where does the green = tech symbolism come from?
Lincoln Wright
There’s nothing wrong with a green flag, it’s just the green in the imagine I was replying to wasn’t striking enough. Drab green flags aren’t going to catch attention, brighter shades will always be better. The purpose of flags is to be visible and catch attention
To what percentage of the world population is that even relevant?
yeah. Also is my knowledge correct that nazis could have been defeated by german communists had USSR had not made an mechanical materialist mistake? I read somewhere iirc that had the socdems at that time had been supported by ussr nazis could have been stopped from getting into power? Is that true?
red(scarlet)/gold all the way tbh
Joshua Green
please no. There is a film which is called "Die Welle" (the wave) which is about liberals crying about "muh totalitarism".
i have actually found no colour combination to be greater than the combination of red-gold and sometimes black
Cooper Phillips
Maybe not a bad idea, but I would say that the design of it would have to be done very carefully. The serpent has traditionally also been viewed as an negative symbol to represent the enemy, to the point that the Soviets and other communists also used it to represent fascism.
Where does the green = tech symbolism come from? Advent of computers, "code", circuit boards, etc.
Too bright, hurts the eyes tbh and doesn't seem "serious". Almost glow in the dark/bright neon.
You should watch the original. It’s the worst anti-fascist propaganda I’ve ever seen. The documentary makes it look good youtu.be/ICng-KRxXJ8
Aiden Howard
idk mane, i just read a wikipedia article saying before it was a commie color it was used to represent the blood that jesus spatted all over the romans.
beige and purple, specifically a beige coat with purple gloves
Colton Johnson
but still I agree with but I don't know if this has to do with our association of red/gold to previous revolutions
Luis Gomez
33% of world population is Christian. idk if by that they mean by-birth or by-faith, but even if the former is the assumption, how many of these 33% do you think will associate red with christ when they see communists?
for you, but not me
Dominic Wright
ok fuck jesus and his shitty blood, still a cool color.
John Perry
yeah but have you read 'his' (idk) quotations in the bible? seems pretty socialist-y
Xavier Jenkins
Fuck, this is actually a good name for a movement. Why did it have to be used by some random teacher for a fascist social experiment? Now no one but fascists can take it. Its like fascists ruining the term "Black" in a title (Black Sun, Black Front, etc.), save for actual black liberation movements of course. At least communists get to keep "Black Circle".
Jason Clark
Haven't read the bible but christcucks(just like any other religious communist)have definitely shown me some quotes showing their religion is ackchyually the one that has the oldest socialist values.
Asher Wright
James has some pretty good quotes tbh (Though most of them are because he was actually witness to what he thought was the end of the Roman Empire and civilization as they knew it.)
what did those christcucks want to accomplish by showing you those? I am pretty sure they were reactionary too.
lel they don't know 'primitive communism'? i put very high expectations, don't i?
Justin Martin
Was talking about exactly this quote. Also this could result in a nice discussion we start a thread about socialist teachings in different religions? But at the same time is unnecessary because when these texts were written the context (production v. social relations?) must have affected the teachings so it seems obvious for old religious texts to lean socialist
