I always thought it was a positive because it kept the redditors away, like anyone who's too scared to visit a website probably isn't capable of being in a revolution. It's what made 4chan so fun back in the day, it was a scary "hacker" website that people only read about so it kept the site's population in check.

What came after our "scary hacker" phase was much worse than any of that though. The phrase lurk moar was gone and the eternal era of the pepe began. /r9k/ became the most influential board and rapidly deteriorated. It went from creating popular new memes to being the home of incel culture. Somewhere along the way gamergate happened which was the precursor to Zig Forums becoming the dominant board and the Trump era. I lived through all of this and have deep regrets about much of it. I did a whole lot to contribute to the /i/ culture back in 06/07 and my motivations weren't always sound. But I'd argue the fascists were more of a thing that happened in this decade.
