The sixth mass extinction event is already well underway. It has been since before we were born.
Humanity's expansion and consumption are the cause.
Even the earliest humans were prodigious hunters, but their ability to fundamentally alter their ecology was very limited, and the earth was still bountiful with lifeforms we will never see today.
Agriculture and technology allowed for, and then expanded to require, growth and surplus; both predicated on resource consumption, both fundamentally opposed to sustainability. Capitalism may indeed be the worst ideology, as many here would claim, and certainly it presided over many of the worst atrocities of the modern era, but this is an ideology born out of a still primitive, primordial even, drive for more - more everything, forever - it is the unheard mantra of all life.
Human society will not be able to heal much of the damage it has done. It will not be able to transition to sustainable societies even if it wanted to, which it, like all life, fundamentally does not want to do. Fitness/power maximization is inherent to all forms of life humans have encountered, and in the human context that means that available resources will be utilized until they are depleted/vanish. It has been, and would be so, from the very moment it was possible to be so.
The current age is an unprecedented era of death in this planet's history. Most people are unaware of this, because they are so far removed from the natural world - they don't see it crumbling beneath their feat.
Embrace life, and embrace death, for you will surely come to know both.
I think there is a future but it will be nothing like before. We've gone too far for permanent change not to be set in motion. I believe in imminent social crisis though.
