Ships use both. Electronic chart for passage planning and a paper chart for backup. So we learn about both. After Christmas I'll be taking electronic chart training, along with some advanced firefighting. I wouldn't let maths put you off applying. The actual job has no maths involved at all. They make us learn how to calculate the height of the tide, or distances based on sextant readings from the sun/stars for the same reason they make us learn how to command an open top oar driven lifeboat during an abandon ship drill. This industry takes an exceptionally long time to adapt to change, and as a cadet you'll find you pretty much train as if you're going to become an officer on the RMS Titanic. Pic related is an example of the sort of stuff you'd do at college before going to sea. You can see some of my workings out on the chart. Honestly fuck London. Biggest perk of this job for me is once I'm qualified and I've got a job as an officer I can live wherever I want. Save for a year, no tax, then buy a place somewhere in the North Pennines and never look back.
Pretty neat tbh, I have a thing for maps so it honestly sounds right up my street, sitting there studying maps sounds fucking comfy (bonus points for doing it by candlelight)

Chartwork is honestly very comfy. You can get engrossed in a good chartwork question for a hours, only realising its time for smoko because everyone around you is getting up. Comfiest lessons are the ones where the lecturer would just give us a 30 mark chartwork question on the board. You start looking up your height of tide, you draw a little diagram of your vessel, checking it doesn't hit a sandbank or an overhead bridge, then you pull out the dividers/parallel rulers and start drawing out your passage. It's therapeutic.
The only help this board needs is new mods that do stuff other than shitpost and ban people who disagree with them
