Religion is a system of cause-and-effect that dominates a person's mind. That system doesn't need to have gods to work, and you can be a religious fanatic even if your religion is the strong belief that eating bananas balances the bodily fluids of a person in such a way that they start acting nicer and makes his IQ higher. Then you could start a cult or force people at gunpoint to eat bananas.
