Simpler systems have gotten lock-ons against the F-35. It has always been well known that the F-35 only has decent stealth nose on, if you can see it from the side, even out-dated systems have a good chance.

F-35 has only decent stealth from the front against high frequency radars. Low frequency radars fuck the stealth of the F-35 completely. You can basically get a lock on the F-35 with an S-75 or S-125. If they plane gets in range. The only way to fuck with the air defense of a competent country is to combine SEAD/DEAD and jamming.

In terms of russian OLS, front on (adiabatic heating) the detection range for an aerodynamic F-16 is 50km, rear on (no afterburner) detection range is 90km.
Considering F-35 is about as aerodynamic as a brick and has an acetylene torch for an engine, it would be detectable for 70km front on and 120km from rear.
BVR starts at 30km, russians have infrared missiles with range of 80km.
The F-35 dogfighting missile is an AIM-9X block II, which have a range of 15km, less than a half of what previous AIM-9's had and less than a third of what AIM-132 have.

Three methods:
1. They had really good spies which gathered NATO communications because between-country communications weren't encrypted. These spies let the Serbs work out which airfields NATO used, which helped them map out an "air corridor" through which most aircraft had to come in due to fuel constraints. They put scouts in these corridors with binoculars and cellphones, they mostly couldn't ID aircraft, but they could tell when an aircraft took off or when it was spotted and (by airspeed) where and when it would enter Serbia. This meant that Serbs didn't have to use search radar, which otherwise would have to stay always on, and would be a juicy HARM target.
2. They literally just changed the frequency of their targeting radar, since it no longer worked in X band it could see the stealth aircraft. Now X-band is used because it gives the best accuracy and least interference from rain and other shit, so their accuracy was reduced by changing frequencies…. but it was enough to give them a general location. And they knew where and when the aircraft would come in due to the scouts.
3. They operated the radar in 15 second bursts until the F-117 had opened its bomb bays, which gave them enough of a signature to fire the missile. They couldn't localize the F-117 except by vector, so if the pilot made any changes he'd be safe, but F-117 is a tin can and couldn't maneuver more than a few hundred yards off course before the Mach 3 missile arrived…. and the warhead of the missile was more than enough to cover any attempted escape. When it entered range the proximity fuse (which was unaffected by RAM) exploded and fucked up the tail, which had no redundant surfaces because it was "stealth". Pilot was forced to eject and aircraft glided into a farmers field.
Two key facts to remember in the aftermath: a) better anti-stealth defenses exist today, purpose built for the job and b) F-117 was more stealthy than F-35.
