That has been a common belief among White Americans (who are generally Euromutts of western euro descent) since the late 1800s. The immigration act of 1924 (which pretty much stopped Italian and slav immigration) was a manifestation of this belief.

Most people that identify as "American" on the census are Anglo-Americans. With this taken into account, Anglo-Americans outnumber German-Americans. There are also many Scots-Irish, Scottish, and even some Welsh; plus a metric fuckton of Irish if you count that. Anglo-Americans fought the revolutionary war, founded the US, wrote the Constitution, everything. Our national language is English for a reason- America is BRITISH, not German.
