Because God looks at the heart, man looks on the outside. If you keep on sinning, then you really don't believe in God, and you aren't saved. After healing a person, Jesus Christ specifically ordered them to "sin no more." The General Epistle of James states demons believe in God, but they shudder at the sound of His Name.
Honestly, if you read the entire Bible, the answer will become apparent to you by the Wisdom of the Holy Spirit. Don't sin, be holy for God is Holy.

Imagine if you had a son or daughter you loved and wanted the best for. You love them so much you literally died for them in one of the most humiliating and painful ways.
Then when they hear from people not in your family you'll forgive them they decide to say "f you" and mess around all their life. Then when they've given you no glory as a son or daughter and has dragged your good name in the dirt by doing drugs, engaging in worst sex acts they come up to you and won't humble themselves but demand your forgiveness and to be treated like the faithful sons and daughters.
The prodigal son had the humility to say "I am not worthy to be your son, let me be your servant."
