$90k in Federal loans really isn't as insurmountable as he says it was. I'll be rolling with a similar amount once I graduate, and that's if I don't pay on it at all right now. Just working full time in the summers knocks a few grand off per year. I can't remember the final numbers, but I calculated it out and worst case scenario was still manageable.
So was he active duty then or not? If he was the military would have been covering a lot of his living expenses if he was on base. He could have also applied for a military service student loan deferment. Even if he wasn't active duty he could have applied for debt-based loan forbearance. He's basically like the women who work the clubs to pay for college. It's not truly necessary; it's just the easy way out for somebody with a nice body.
