This thread is for the discussion of interesting and largely unknown military and intelligence service missions. I will start with an example.
Operation Sommerregen(Summer Rain)
Operation Sommerregen was a covert operation conducted by the BND=Bundesnachrichtendienst(Federal Intelligence Service) in Afghanistan during the Soviet Intervention in the 80s. The task of this mission was to capture Soviet equipment so it could be transported to Germany for analysis and testing. The Operation started in 1981 and most likely ended with the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989. Accompanied by elite soldiers the agents entered the county via the Afghanistan-Pakistan border as humanitarian workers. To actually get their hands on Soviet equipment the soldiers and agents were working together with the Mujahideen but obviously had to disguise their identity as German military personnel. Agents that took part in the mission reported to have worked closely together with the Mujahideen or otherwise they would have denied the cooperation. This close relation led to various engagements where German soldiers were fighting alongside the Mujahideen against Soviet soldiers. During the course of the Operation various equipment such as guns, ammunition, grenades, anti-tank weapons, radio devices, navigation devices and (parts of) armored vehicles/tanks/helicopters/planes has been secured. The Operation has ended without any German soldiers/agents missing or dead and is regarded as a huge success for the BND. A lot of information about Operation Sommerregen is still classified and is likely going to remain for some time.

During the Viet Nam conflict, US SOF sought ways to disrupt NVA and VC operations. One of the most unusual (and entertaining to me) was that they would sneak into ammo depots and reload some of the cartridges super hot. One of these guys told me that he would dump out the powder and reload it completely full with Red Dot. This would cause some of the small arms (AK-47s mostly) to explode.

This was done in Syria too apparently and probably elsewhere in history, I know the concept also existed for explosives that looked like coal being for taking out ships. Surely you'd want to reload them beforehand and just toss the fucked rounds into the existing pile of ammo rather than doing it on site.

The reason that I was told for doing it on sight was that the reloaded cartridge should be from the same lot. This would make it harder for such cartridges to be spotted and make investigations more difficult.

Operation 新しい夜明け (New Dawn) was a covert operation conducted by the JSDF in the 1970's until the modern day, during the Afghan-Soviet War. The task of the mission was to fund and support the Mujahideen, while providing them with materiel and personnel to conduct their guerrilla war effort. The ultimate aim was to drag the Soviet Union into their Vietnam, and cripple the superpower. A secondary objective was to spread the ideology of Jihad across the Muslim diaspora, directing it towards America to destroy their status as a world superpower. Among the upper echelons of the JSDF, it was humorously referred to as 最終的な神の風, a reference to the Kamikaze pilots of WWII. This is primarily due to the psyop aspect of the operation, which involved spreading awareness of Japanese culture to neuter the western male. There is only one known soldier who took part in the operation, due to the high levels of secrecy involved. Nevertheless, the Japanese still treat this man as a war hero to this day, as they acknowledge he - and his companions - are responsible for destroying the red menace and eternal mutt.

That was later, the first instance of it was done by a USAF Combat Controller attached to first group. He was an avid hunter and competition shooter and reloading was a significant part of this. He carried a little portable loading press into the field with his gear after talking it over with his team. They tried it a few times and watched how it developed. I was formalized later as an official op. This is why ammo was later shipped in spam cans by eastern bloc countries.

They've always been in spam can format. SOG would literally walk away with cans upon cans from a raid to put in a fuck your face round, then return them to charlie in a later raid in another place.
Not OP, but I know the picture is from one of our camouflage threads some years ago. However operation sommerregen is real and there was a documentary about it on German state tv some time ago.

A small addendum as well, during the Battle of Berlin it is known that US and non-Soviet allied troops declined to attack German positions fighting defensively against the Soviets. The most quoted example is that of US troops watching German artillery batteries across the Elbe fire on the Soviet advance and declining to intervene. This order in a way came from on high as General Bradley did not want to expend American lives capturing territory that would mostly go to the Soviets according to the agreement at Yalta.

Semi related, many Estonian soldiers fighting for Germany during WW2 wished to surrender to the allies after Germany had ordered a full retreat. The men that were still left were pulled back to Poland and ended up in the Prague offensive. They then wanted to move west to surrender to the Allies. Le liberator partisans had killed and tortured the soldiers who had already surrendered and those who managed to reach the western allies were handed back to the soviets. Talk about bad luck.
It never fails to amaze me how terrible they were. Not only in terms of behavior, but also in regards to competence, the Russians or more accurately, Jews really are like orcs.

There was a rumor going around throughout germany regarding the already shaky grounds of the alliance between the Soviets and the western powers, one of the big reasons the volkssturm was formed was to be a delaying action to hold the soviets back long enough for the alliance to crumble and for the Allies to rush forward and finish Stalin.
Patton was pushing for this ever since he got into Germany once he saw what was going on, he even argued to rearm German prisoners and send them east to at least try save Berlin.
One of the final major battles of the eastern front was the battle of halbe, where volkssturm and wehrmacht troops fought for seven days not only trying to break out but in the rumors american reinforcements were on the way.
