An Arkansas man is headed to prison after being convicted of taking guns to Chicago and illegally selling them.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois announced Thursday that Klint Kelley, 28, of Malvern, had been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison. Kelley pleaded guilty this year to counts of unlawfully engaging in the business of dealing firearms and selling firearms to a known felon.
Undercover federal agents arrested Kelley in September after he had sold 21 firearms, including a shotgun and nine rifles, to a criminal informant in Chicago at a total price of $14,750, according to a court affidavit. Kelley purchased the weapons at gun shows in Arkansas and traveled more than 700 miles to Chicago to sell them, the affidavit says.
Authorities said Kelley grew up in Illinois and moved to Arkansas several years ago.
Anthony Riccio, Chicago's police chief for organized crime, said after Kelley's arrest that Kelley was believed to be "one of the main sources" of illegal firearms for Chicago's South Side.
"He formerly lived in the Chicago area and he had contacts within the street gangs," Riccio said at a news conference, "and he was providing them hundreds [of guns] before we locked him up."
