Maybe through bogomils, but its actually quite an old teaching in gn*stic texts. Basically what can I remember now, is that one of them says that there are several heavens guarded by archons and you have to tell them a special paroles to pass to the other heaven, or else you'll be thrown back to earth to be reincarnated.
I've actually read about it not concerning about toll houses, but rather when reading about gn*sticism in general (it was a book about world religions written by the Orthodox priest.
