Without a nuclear reactor it is impossible. Wind energy is a meme and you can't use the propeller to generate electricity either because it's not enough. And you can't cover the ships in solar panels either, because people need to work on the deck and most importantly containers need to be on the deck. Where else are you planning on adding enough panels?

not really, no. You need to get the energy to move somewhere, but even if you went with solar panels, you would need to replace those panels somehow after they broke. You could probably grow food under UV lamps below deck (can't do it top deck. Should a storm come and waves splash across it, your soil would get salted) and of course fish, but your equipment would wear down and you have no access to iron or a way to refine it. You have no way to make advanced medicine. Nobody is going to buy a shipload of fish from a ship that randomly sailed in - people who buy large quantities of fish already have their suppliers and if you wanted to be one as well, you would need to supply him regularly and essentially work a job.

Depends wholly on the location of the drive/engive and your ability to manipulate it from inside. The whole process would require airlocks to be able to dock/get in/out but that's not a huge issue, the main thing would be the engines and thrusters, with maybe some problems designing features for pirate activity, though just tying your armored suits to the ship before assault would probably be sufficient, it could even improve the handling of your weapons unless you use turrets or remote control them.

Boiler chemistry is fuck easy to maintain and fuck easier to maintain with a dedicated PLC. Raid one or two pirate vessels/sell the guns to some terrorists and we should have the $500 or so to install an old Allen-Bradley running RSLogix 500 and a few chemical/visual sensors for about $1,000. Better yet I we could rewire the water distillation and various other systems to it and automate the whole god damned thing with only one or two missing fingers if given a working laptop and a week to program it. Shit, I we could probably program an old 80s Mitsubishi robotic arm to do most of the basic manual shit for us as well.

Solar panels are retarded and made of a handful of fragile glasses connected to corrosive/carcinogenic metals/minerals. Towing is a quick way to break them (assuming they'd float at all). They're a shit for a reason if you don't live in Arizona or some other state that sees sunshine for 98% of the year. The ocean is too cloudy to effectively use solar cells most of the time unless you're along the equator. Wind turbines would be far more useful, but then you've got to find room for the fucking massive transformer on board the ship that needs constant electrical oil refills/maintenance in order to not explode in a giant, oil-burning mess, and that maintenance will give that particular tech cancer before he's 40 because of how toxic the shit inside a wind turbine transformer/power regulation system is. Oil or coal is legitimately safer to use, and nuclear would be the best. If you have an oil or coal system, we could put an anabolic shit fermenter on the ship to handle human excrement, and siphon the methane produced during the shit fermentation to provide auxiliary power/natural gas for cooking (or just use it to heat a boiler for providing heat through the ship in colder climates).

Of course you can't manufacture medicine on a ship because that requires gaining access to patented chemical reactions, but a pharmacy is more than possible if we hired a pharmaceutical tech and kept him stocked with base pharmaceutical drugs bought from the Mexican or Colombian cartels.

From what I understand of international law, you're beholden to the laws of whatever flag you fly on your ship, and failure to fly a flag is grounds for being blasted out of the water by any roving marauders military vessels you encounter.

theres a slight problem with offshore platforms: you have to put them outside of the exclusive economic zone of other countries in the area, which leaves only a few spots open that are on or near decently popular trade routes, can support an offshore platform, and aren't already territorial waters. Some countries claim and (try to) defend waters out to the edge of the continental shelf, explicitly to prevent foreign offshore platforms popping up a few hundred miles away. I would look to the southwestern coast of mexico to put this first, its just outside the panama canal, decent-to-good access to american and asian markets, and oil can come from texas or venezuela through the canal. While its a bit out of the way, across the pacific from asia and the canal from america, its the best spot i can think because its on one of the busiest trade routes in the world, outside of territorial claims, and close to ports.

Also, if you have a static(not tethered) offshore platform, you can use it to generate tidal power. Basically, the high tide fills a large tank/pool that flows out and turns a generator at low tide. Very simple and reliable, but large footprint for power output, even compared to solar panels, however the size of tides varies by location and time of the month. In some places, tidal energy could power a large chunk of the platform. But you can only get tidal power if you're moored to the ground; it won't work for a floating structure.

I'm starting to think an offshore platform hotel could evolve into a country with its own laws. Any naval architects on Zig Forums want to get to work designing a modular hexagonal/square/triangular platform built to stick together? the main concern is medical evacuation; if tourists are there, it'll be bad if they get sick and the only way back to shore, let alone a hospital is a 2-3 day boat ride. This means an airstrip, and a minimum length of 2000'ft for landing small bussiness jets. Helicopters often dont have to range to do medevac to offshore platforms, and its a risk the oil producers are trying to mitigate by developing a civilian version of the Osprey, which is hilarious because the osprey is basically the most unsafe aircraft ever. Once you can connect 2-3 platforms for an airstrip, it should be simple to connect them in a box or ring to form a safe harbor in open ocean, a legitimate attraction for the many wealthy yachters constantly cruising the seas. You could have an elevator to the bottom of the structure so tourists can watch interesting ocean creatures glow in the dark or eat each other and shit. You could have a gun range at sea, shooting targets on bouys floated downwind. Fake beaches are obvious and easy, though keeping the sand around is not.
This could seriously work, if targeting the right group of wealthy yachters and charging ludicrous docking fees on ships for safe space in open ocean, but targeting tourism as your main source of income makes location even more important. As far as i know the most traveled yachting area in the world is the Caribbean, followed by the atlantic crossing from the Caribbean to the canary islands. If you wanted to make money through tourism(and tourism/tax haven alone), you would put it in the middle of the atlantic, about 23 degrees latitude.

After some checking on seafloor depth maps, and looking at seamount heights worldwide, this should be absolutely doable. In fact, i found a decent seamount to start work on: Kukenthal or MacGreggor seamounts. (35*23"31' x -51*55"50', arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=5ae9e138a17842688b0b79283a4353f6 ) This depthmap says kukenthal is only 15 meters down, but these measurements are not very accurate. I found a different article that says its actually at 760m depth, well within offshore drilling capabilities these days. Most seamounts are covered with ocean life, but this one was cleared 10 years ago by bottom trawling nets, so no peta to worry about. major trade route between the us east coast and the med is around 100 kn miles south, easily close enough to justify a stopover for any cruise ships. (naval traffic map: map.openseamap.org/ ) As an independent nation/satellite to the US(lets face it, this would end up being someones satellite state), we would provide an airbase thats not invulnerable but much tougher than a carrier capable of fielding larger land-based craft like overloaded c-130s dead center in the middle of the north atlantic.

A city in the North Atlantic would actually be really great for the hemisphere the more i think of it, someone really needs to get on this
