I swear I've heard of a similar story of a American pilot or navy officer who was stationed at Pearl Harbor, met one of the Japanese pilots, someone who had flown close enough to him that he could make out his face, who participated in the attack and befriended him. Probably the way aircraft are at the border between personal and impersonal warfare. You're not likely to hear this kind of story about an artillery crewman since he won't have a connection with any individual enemy. It's less likely for infantry too because the fighting is TOO personal, killing each other face to face. When it comes to the air, you can think of it as shooting at the plane, not the guy inside it, while still thinking of the enemy being individuals. It may also have something to do with the way pilots can be more harmlessly knocked out of the fight. The ability to shoot down a plane and have the pilot, now completely unable to continue the fight, parachute to safety has no parallel in infantry, where it's the guy's own body doing the fighting.

A book I read on the history of air combat in WWI had some interesting stories. At the start of the war, most of the pilots were flying enthusiasts who barely cared about the war. Recon planes of opposing sides would wave to one another as they passed. Early attempts at air combat were rather…improvised, with pilots throwing grenades (and on at least one occasion a brick) at one anther or trying to fire personal weapons offhandedly. Once someone had figured out how to mount forward firing weaponry, the pilots began competing to prove themselves as the most skilled, while also largely respecting one another. Probably my favorite account is of an English pilot dueling a German, ending with the German wounded and forced to put his plane down in French territory. The English pilot then landed nearby, walked up to the German and they paid each other compliments about the duel while waiting for French forces to take the German prisoner.
Of course, as the war dragged on, the prevailing attitude began to darken. By the end of the war, half the aces was depressed or suicidal.
