I recently watched an interview with a federal prosecutor, where he was postulating on the possibility of Cohen or manafort being convicted and sentenced, THEN given a deal after the fact.

The prosecutor said it happens all the time, and he personally used to go into people's prison's and offered to cut deals with them so they could be released from prison.

Sometimes it's easier for the defendant to make the decision after getting a taste of what it's actually like in prison.
