not Catholic but it always irks me when people think that the "gates of Hell" verse is deacribing a defensive scenario. That literally makes zero sense. Are you being attacked by a gate? It's obviously describing an offensive battle. The Church (whichever one is the true one) is waging a war against Hell and is destined to conquer it in the end. That's what that verse is saying. It's saying Hell won't succeed in repelling the attack against it in the end.
