In my experience, they're (mostly) incredibly nice people. They host weddings. They do charity events. They have a funnel cake stand at the local church bazaar. They host important events for local Catholic school students. There's literally nothing shady about them. They're the most un-shady religious fraternity you could imagine.

This is such a flawed point, the Shriners have a hospital with burn centers, crippled children centers, these are clearly good works, but they're not automatically from God. It's the smoke screen that makes these organizations shady, not their isolated good works.

Since we're on the subject of fraternal organizations, I'd like to chime in with my experience. I'm in a college fraternity, not going to say which one, and I can assure you as a high ranking member we are not pagan. Our founders were just about all baptists or some form of christian, about half were pastors, and nothing in our ritual is really satanic or pagan. We're simply trying to make balanced men and help the community. Take this with a grain of salt, I don't know the ins and outs of other fraternities, brotherhoods, etc so there are probably some that are pagan or not christian but not all of them are.

The "pagan mystery ritual" that people would probably get paranoid about is a lighthearted Greek mythology and crusade LARP / morality play.
