They had a loose federation of Slavic tribes centered around Kiev which then split up in the princedoms.
Later on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Moskow conquered most of it and the prince of Moskow declared himself king of Russia.
This is the reason why the patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church is called "Patriarch of Moskow and All Rus' ".

Aside from the fact that the area's been invaded more often than /cow/ causes someone to sperg out, the western territory of the country had been willingly ceded by Russia to other countries several times, Poland and also Austria were traded the land west of the Dnieper. So that's not being a good steward of territory, if nothing else.
