Officials on Thursday captured a raccoon that attacked an 83-year-old woman and likely sunk its teeth into a dog within less than 24 hours in the same Monmouth County neighborhood.
The raccoon was set to be euthanized and tested for rabies after the pair of attacks in Belmar, said Monmouth County SPCA Chief of Law Enforcement Ross Licitra.
In the first reported incident, a borough resident was on her back porch when the animal lunged at the woman, biting her hand, back and ankle Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. A neighbor reportedly used a shovel fight off the vicious mammal before it fled.
