Violent Video Games in Christianity

Is it alright for us Christians to play violent video games? I don't want to hurt anyone in real-life, i see violent video games as only a bit of fun. (pic related I've spent a good amount of my free time in this game)

I play them so I'm biased to favor yes. There is a lot of violence in the old testament that God himself commands and does, but isn't something that he thinks is great because it creates suffering and destruction. For example he loved David and guided him in battle, but his son Solomon had to construct the temple because he was a violent King. Now in videogames you don't commit violence you simulate it, which causes no suffering or destruction. You shouldn't however be addicted to videogames as they can ruin your life. I have friends that have 0 fun playing "competitive" games and are ridiculously toxic, which I don't think it's healthy either. Really the only thing obviously wrong is that we could use the time to be productive in a more meaningful way.

I won't say yes or no, but I will advise you that whatever you put into your eyes and ears will affect your thoughts, words, and actions. I'm not saying that violent video games make people violet, but to suggest that they have no impact on you is folly.

Patrician choice, my friend.

It's not good to play video games if they're anti-Christianity. I notice that a lot of JRPG fans are atheists who lost their faith because of games like FF7

I know you never said anything about TF2 but TF2 has nothing against Christianity wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/1/12/Engineer_taunts08.wav

I know, that's why I mentioned JRPGs.

Also could you give me some more info on the whole "JRPG anti-Christian" thing? Just curious

Why FF7? I only remember it being pantheistic with its Lifestream thing. FF has been very antitheistic/anti-Christian since 10 though except for FF15, which surprised me with its Christian themes and imagery.

Not him, but nips seem a bit obsessed with "spooky" church-like settings. You can see that in games like Demon's Souls.

I think this comes more from an infatuation with the relatively mysterious and exotic western medieval culture which contained Christianity. I don't think that they're really trying to comment on Christianity at all, they just appreciate a certain anesthetic.

based but sniper is best class:^)

sniper mains aren't people

do people still play tf2?
i've been wanting to go back but all my friends move on to overgay, and I dont like that shit so I'm playing quake now.

Ahh quake
*sip*
Now that's a real game

steamcharts.com/top It's still alive and well, though it's community is filled with zoomers with twitter meme binds who are just obnoxious and annoying

I play either grand strategy games or these. Played TF as Medic and Sniper, now playing overwatch as Mercy and Ashe. So as other user said, I'm kind of biased but yes.
Though you can encounter a very toxic community sometimes, so you must simply ignore them and try not to get angered. Actually, that may be a good exercise for that.

wrong

I think we would all be better off without these violent things in our mind, but I don't think it's a sin to view them. I would certainly avoid things like mortal combat though.

would throwing big stones at air that COULD hit people and even LITTLE BABIES be considered "violent"?

Personally I avoid almost any game involvong killing human beings, especially on modern consoles. I’ll play the Legend of Zelda and other such games on NES, SNES, and game boy, and games where you’re killing monsters robots etc.

After getting serious about Christianity I sold my PS4 and took all of the violent games off of steam. I really miss Goldeneye, my favorite game of all time, and the Star Wars games, though sometimes I’ll play the old Battlefront 2 against the droids. For the most part I just stick to Nintendo, somewhat begrudgingly.

This all might sound bizarre or lame, but I feel like Christianity is about making sacrafice for God’s sake. It can be good for your mind and spirit to recreationally set your eyes on human death and suffering. Maybe I’m right and maybe not, but I know God appreciates my willingness to give up what I love in my efforts to please him and keep his commandments.

Nobody will say that what you did is bad, but wargames were played since time immemorial by the military

How about playing as a bagan or muslim in CK2

absolutely unnaceptable. The only real christian way to play CK2 is pic related.

Good ol Crusader Kings 2. Those were the days.

Yet another reason to BEGOME ORDODOX :DDD

Context matters in such case… the type of violence, how and towards whom/what is expressed… in DooM (the original) you are slaying the literal legions of Hell brought on Mars and our world due to mankind’s hubris: in that case, it’s a justified and righteous violence in line with what the game tells your enemies are and why you ought to slay them.

Do you people seriously believe you'll have a sitdown with Jesus and discuss whether you picked the right faction in Age of Empires or whether it was just to kill virtual pixels because they were of demonic origin? Wow.

It's pixels. It's meaningless.

One thing is being scrupulous and another is asking questions; this topic for now seems not too much scrupulous.

Just wondering but what counts as "human"? Do you judge on appearance or is it alright if the lore says it's not human?

Attached: Metrocop.jpg (379x686, 111.66K)

I thought the metro cops were just sellout humans though?

Use your conscience OP. At the very least, stuff like Mortal Kombat and Dead Space should be considered tasteless. The best videogames don't even have gore anyway.

I vaguely remember reading a second century, christian apologetic that said Christians don't even stand the site of blood.
The church has changed, I guess.

That's about pagan sacrificial sites. Large portion, if not the majority of the early Christians were Roman milutary

[Serious] Is it a sin to kill people inside a Church as long it's in a video game?

Espically for money. Though, one can argue that playing a game like Hitman is not violating that rule because 1's and 0's being used to simulate murder isn't technically murder. Which is true, but that doesn't mean it won't have an effect on your soul. Even if it is subtle. Much like how porn desensitizes you to an to sexual immorality, violence in movies and video games desensitizes you to violence and murder in real life. Don't believe me? Venture to Zig Forums or Zig Forums or heck even reddit or twitter and you will see the hatred and vitriol that comes from people's hearts. How they want to kill politician X, or genocide group of people Y, or brutalize person Z for what ever reason they give to justify their behavior. It's abhorrent to a sane person, but the society we live in had normalized it so much you just forget about it seconds later after hearing news of yet another school/mall/movie theater/synagogue/church/mosque shooter.

I'm assuming you are an adult and have the mental capacity to know right from wrong. So you can play these violent videogames if you want, but don't let satan fool you into thinking it is okay to emulte or do those things in real life. Being prudent and avoiding said media would be better for you. The time spent on vidya could be used to glorify God in prayer or be spent doing charity work or learning a skill to advance your career or small business.

A pretty good sermon from Fr. Issac Mary Relyea on the use of our ever depreciating time.

I'm pretty sure they are but higher forms e.g. the soldiers and the elites are "modified" humans so stuff begins to get difficult (both morally and in-game)

Attached: GkdznmwL_SLYLk1QIInpKl-w1AQ7pmnHQpNCeO91Ct8.jpg (727x599, 49.3K)

didn't mean to use that pic BTW

Actually the image does make sense in this thread, since a lot of German games (as you see here) usually censor out gore and human killing

Lol at grown "men" playing video games

yes, and I am the king of donkenings

A good example that comes to mind is the Shin Megami Tensei series. Angels are usually the antagonists in the games, demons are allies, and the final boss for one of the more recent entries was literally YHVH.

Very trustworthy user, I'll post my social security details right away!

This is a fantastic idea and hopefully will inspire more Christian video game presence here and abroad that is less Reddit and more trad.

Tbf, from what I can tell it was literally made today and for this thread.

You have made yourself known now, Retro Star.

Certainly hope this doesn't bite me in the ass someday. I suppose the worst thing about aligning with a new community tied to Zig Forums is the fact it'll be tied to Zig Forums, given all the bad publicity the rest of the site has. It's just so hard finding a more traditional based Christian gaming community these days.

Attached: download (14).gif (500x380, 780.56K)

It's hard to imagine that Legend of Zelda of all things could of had more Christian elements in it… Though it probably would've been a manner of time before they mess it up.

For violence in games. I'd say treat them in the same way as movies. In that while it shouldn't matter because it's not real, there's definitely a few raunchy adult only stuff out there most sensible sort would rather publicly make known that they steer clear of.

That or things with explicit anti-religious themes. For example, love most of the Castevania games as I grew up since you get to play as a cool demon/vampire killer, Christian dude, that is with exception to the latter 3d Castlevania games and recent Netflix American anime adaptation where they take jabs at the Church.

My profile is private for anxiety reasons and i don't like flashy profile names so i named it a generic TF2 joke

Those robots always looked cool.

As much shit I will get for saying this. Scott cawthan not only a Christian that gave butt load of money children hospital. FNAF games do have strong christian overtones.

I never understood why final fantasy 7 considered anti-religious among atheists. when sephiroth suppose to be a anti-Christ figure and the game had themes of forgiveness. Even the final fantasy 7 sequel movie had Baptism portrayed in a positive lights

what does that have to do with the thread?

(checked)
Zig Forums is a board of peace.

Yup, das rite, and BT the coward is a terrorist of peace. All those meme threads glorifying him and encouraging impressionable minds to emulate him are all Mossad propagandists of peace.

Wrath is a deadly sin. Do violent vidya teach people to indulge in their wrath or control it?

Porn on Netflix and in Mass Effect is a problem. Telling young men not to play violent games is also a problem, Helen Lovejoy. It's amazing how Christianity got subverted in favor of faggotry.

Street Fighter style violence is fine.
Mortal Kombat goes too far with the gore and blood.
GTA is for degenerates.

Attached: maki grin.gif (500x578, 138.65K)

I thought Castlevania might be ok, then I readd the lore behind the original game

That doesn't happen

Many far eastern RPG's are anti-christian as they have you fight against and kill some sort of creator god. The Megami Tensei series has you fight YHWH in several games, but I think you can join him in the first SMT, and I've been tempted to try it for this reason. I honestly kind of prefer depicting him as a "bad" guy as that is what most of humanity thinks of the true God and it actually gets closer to the truth of His nature than the idolatrous "just be nice" God of modernity.

Yea, He's the final boss of SMT IV Final, but he was also the final boss of Megami Tensei II…although you could choose at the end to join his Millennium Kingdom. What's interesting is that he orders Satan to do all the evil stuff in the game. While this is blasphemous, I find it neat that it's close to acknowledging that God uses the rebellious angels/demons for His own ends. Usually in Biblical based fiction, Satan is shown as an equal of God's and they try to present tension as if Satan can truly stand of against His will, causing a white knuckled battle that makes mankind wonder "who will win?"

Attached: YHVH_SMTIVF_Official_Art.jpg (1280x1460, 478.7K)

Very interesting. I've never played mainline SMT, part of what keeps me away is the scale and scope of the conflict. Persona being this high school setting with some supernatural demons you fight has always been a lot more of my cup of tea.

To OP's question, I avoid very violent games, and even moderately violent ones. Context and the level of violence usually determines whether or not it is the level of violence I can tolerate. Like street fighter and snk fightan is fine for me, but not a big fan of MK or any of the various shitty gory 90s fighting games.

Attached: Screen Shot 2018-05-08 at 10.49.33.png (484x346, 160.52K)

What about the civ games on 'quick combat'? There's no violence but still people die.

I stopped playing strategy games for different reasons, mostly poor time management. I guess because the deaths were generally quick, on the map, and not in your face and bloody.I played more paradox games too, and those were memey because in the fighting the units didnt even touch each other, or in HOI's case, the units are square boxes with symbols saying their size and type.

don't waste your life on games

Attached: 1529925254876.jpg (706x469, 46.28K)

this

Also, I return to TF2 every halloween. I love that game, so many memories and hard times were walked/thought through while listening to music playing that.

wew lad

means you'll suck crap at the games you play relative to even casual gamers (ignoring the good gamers, and then advanced, and then pros).

If you're going to play games you need to devote a good amount of time to the hobby to actually make improvements and git gud. If you're going to learn to paint or play an instrument the same thing applies.

And then it actually isn't a waste of time because you're improving a skill and that requires discipline and thinking.

Being a perpetual scrub is a waste of time.

Who cares? It's a game. It's supposed to be fun, not a chore or a job.

Psalm 101:3 is a great litmus test, and what you're doing does not sound bizarre or lame. Over the past year and a half I've been convicted over two passages that I feel covers not only a lot of the "Can I…?" questions, but also the "Should I…?" questions.

The context on both of these is Christian freedom and specifically about eating, but I'm not the only one who has tied these two verses together and applied them to broader life.

I'll spared much of the details because I feel as if I'm boasting. Suffice it to say parts of it were a real tug of war. I tried to justify strategy games such as Mountain Blade or Europa Universalis as "brain training", but I couldn't shake the conviction. At the moment, the only stuff I kept was Hacknet and a few similar games since I'm looking to get into cybersecurity or something related, and I feel I can glorify God better with the extra funds I will have. Currently, the only other option I've left open for myself is an online "game night" with friends as I feel playing and spending time with others is more God glorifying.

It's been revealing since I didn't know so much of my identity was wrapped up in gaming until I had to wrestle with it. But I'm starting to see behind the facade to the emptiness of it, and my attachment is weakening. That said, I'll probably miss the Zelda series, and part of me hopes I can play some other games to the Glory of God in the future.

Again I hope this isn't boasting. I'm not very consistent wit the principle and I still have to apply this to many other parts of my life… also sometimes I wonder if I'm being neurotic and just whipping up my own doubts. Anyways, I definitely don't want to imply that others need to follow me, afterall

So this is about our individual walk with Christ and not a list of Dos and Don'ts.

Attached: 6rxatnoldn321.jpg (1920x1080, 643.57K)

if it's not worth getting good at, it's not worth doing

I get what you're saying though, some people just play for a bit of escapism and find "fun" in casual gaming

This is a lie.
Reminder Link is CHRISTIAN. This is from official nintendo source ←

Attached: Link prays to Jesus Christ.png (550x720, 151.42K)

That's concept art from before ALttP, since then they've created a Pantheon includinf 3 creation goddeses and some other goddess named Hylia. You literally have to pray to idols of Hylia in BOTW to increase health and stamina…and that's using spirit orbs you get from Buddhist looking exquisite corpses.

Even the old games mixed Christianity with paganism. Sure there are crosses on your shield and the graves in the first two games.
But you get the "Bible" in the first game (changed to "Book of Magic" in the US) that makes the magic wand leave fire behind. And the second game has you retrieve a really important "trophy" for a town that's literally called an "goddess statue" in the Japanese version.

I think there are a lot of questions we can ask about which, if any, video games are alright to play. Here are just a couple that come to mind:
1. Most video games are secular media. Is any secular media alright? If so, are video games any better or worse than other media, such as tv, movies, books, etc?
2. Is all violence in games bad? What if it's about self-defense or fighting against some evil? Cartoon violence? What about strategy games, such as war games? What if there is fighting, but it is not-graphic? (Like in strategy games, where it might consist of sprites)
3. In fantasy and sci-fi settings, is it ok to have fictional religions and deities? If so, to what extent? What about magic, or fantasy races? In a sci-fi setting, what about aliens or self-aware robots?
4. Are video games something that can be played in moderation, or something to be avoided entirely?

I'm not sure that all video games are bad, or even if it's that clear-cut. It might be that it depends on how strong your faith is. But I don't want to tell someone who shouldn't be playing games that it's okay too.
I've tried multiple times to quit video games altogether. Personally, I found I became idle and spent a lot more time either sitting around doing nothing, or masturbating. I hoped having a hobby would keep me from being idle, but I also don't want to just give a go-ahead to all video games. If video games are okay in moderation, and even then only in moderation, we need to be more passionate about God then our hobbies.

Would a board or general for this be a worthwhile idea? Something to tell Christians which video games are definitely to be avoided, discuss the less certain ones,, but more importantly help Christians make sure they are playing with moderation and helping them to put God first.

The Bible says no.
Psalm 11:5

So I know we worry about violence in video games, but what about other forms of media? There does seem to be a worry in regards to TV or movies, but not to the same degree as with video games as far as I'm aware. Is that because less youth read nowadays? Or is it because books aren't a visual form of media? Or is it because video games have an interactive element?

Take Tolkien for example. I haven't actually read it, but it's supposed to be rooted in Christian themes and contains conflict with evil. I don't think that would be sinful, even though it contains violence.

I certainly can't think of any video games that are firmly rooted in Christian themes, bu ti f there hypothetically were one, would that be a problem if it involved fighting evil?

gateway unclean spirits.

I agree.

Stop being holy when elves are involved

Of course it isn't but you'll make excuses and just do what you want to do anyway like every other Christian out there does already.

I like games like quake and doom and wolfenstein because it lets me larp and pretend im killin demons and stuff like that

other than that playing some team fpses like cs, tf2 or some cod isnt bad.

minecraft is especially based, i've made so many farms that with my new enderman farm i have gained 20,000+ enderpearls within a day

Wolfenstein is a Nazi/conservative killing simulator, it's probably as bad in terms of violence as it gets

Friendly reminder Zig Forums that the Holocaust never happen, Nazism promoted fatherless teen pregnancy, slaughtered millions of whites and worked with Swiss jewish bankers.

Christians in the early centuries were against even watching the Colosseum fights.

Christians should abstain from fleshly lusts and from culture, as it is filled with nothing but the desire to sin, which can infect you. There is nothing neutral, holy men produce holy things, and sinners produce things tainted with sin. Games in general are worthless, if not always. They are the definition of childish things.

by this definition christians should only consume content made by christians for christians. Which i think is a very narrow view. Whatever works for you, but don't come around telling anyone who doesn't do this isn't a christian and "not a REAL man".

You don't have to like the Nazis themselves but in these games (at least in the promo material) the Nazis are used as a stand-in for normal conservative Americans.
You said it not me

Vidya isn't Christian at all, the soccer mums of the 90s were right. Most vidya has masonic and kabbalistic sublimals.

used to love castlevania but after realizing its probably slanderous of the guy dracula was modeled after it feels kinda hollow

is MGQ satanic?

It's designed to incite you to break the sixth commandment, inflame yourself with lust and willingly and knowingly inflict self-abuse (also called masturbation) upon yourself.

can i still play it for the story?

That sounds like SDA/JW
animism to me. Minecraft isn’t going to make your computer haunted.

This. You gotta remember that many Asians find Christian & Western aesthetics exotic, the same way weebs will often larp as Buddhists while knowing little about the authentic tradition. An example would be Berserk (in manga) and Dark Souls (in gaming). They're like outsider takes on medieval European culture & loosely influenced by the aesthetics of traditional Christianity, but without any deep understanding of them (no hate, I love both series which is why I use them as examples). Basically don't read so much into these things or let them influence your real world viewpoint.

So are SMT and Persona for example off limits for their adaptation of Christian elements or is it okay if it doesn't make you question your faith?

Attached: m96cvmczgbk21.jpg (2048x1399, 435.11K)

Have you played them yourself? I would say they are interesting takes on incorporating a variety of mythologies and religions and trying to make a coherent story out of it. However, I feel like in terms of Christian elements they always exclude the mention of Jesus Christ and his existence, which I feel like kind of completely misses the point of Christianity. Like anything from the East involving religion, they can make an interesting bit of entertainment with the knowledge they have, but expecting them to completely get what Christianity is about and accurately depict it with near flawless execution is something I highly doubt will ever happen. If they ever do attempt to do Christianity a justice, it would take a lot of effort and research on their part and by then it probably wouldn't be in a easily digestible format that would gain any sort of traction.
