Because nails don't get as good of a grip as screws do. This is because screws have a lip due to the incline that runs down them as a miniature wedge. Nails are nice when you don't have to worry about the nails withstanding weight but only the material. But with screws you have to worry about the material since the screws, if properly forged, won't break before most materials with exception for stones.
