While its arguable that there is no such a thing as a free market, you are objectively wrong. You live in the product of a free market: post WWII globalism. I will remind you that the Soviet Union, juggernaut of development it was, was not able to keep up with said free market. It was constantly playing catch-up for its own perceived survival. If Stalin didn't believe that the US was going to invade in 30 min, the Soviet Union would have been as similarly backwards in 1990 as it was in 1925. The Soviet Union didn't advance to better its people, it advanced out of self preservation. And while the US advanced also for self preservation, it was not nearly as much of an economy-encompassing endeavor.
All societies have benefited, materially, by trading the resources that they have established monopolistic control over through violence. Trade is good, it brings materials to the places where there is knowledge to transform them into more desirable things. The problem with Statism is that it leads to entrenched interests. People get to positions where things are good and any change for the better means uncertainty for them. So they resist all change. China was like this for ages and it led to England forcing Opium down their throats. The entrenched bureaucratic class had no incentive to advance society, and so it didn't. In order to better humanity, I need to force a frontier that works on optimizing human happiness / welfare. And when those trials are seen as good, they can then flow down to society. Will Elon Musk succeed at giving us electric cars, vacuum subways, or spaceflight? Who knows. Would a large industrial state have ever considered doing any of these things? I think Elon Musk has a better chance of succeeding than the Nazi or Soviet government ever had in even starting. On the subject of Mr. Musk: people need to be allowed to fail. Probing the frontier will bring about failures and hackneyed ideas. The state isn't allowed to fail. That's why it has poured billions into a shitty F-35 project.
