For many, the social aspect of developing some piece of software is as, or more, important as the software itself. The actual freedom that comes from using open source software (it's often not libre software, as companies have lobbied hard the idea that cool guys use MIT, not GPLv3) is also secondary.
Then you have Discord, with minimal effort you can setup some /comfy/ place with a cute logo, name, colored names, and even custom emoji for all your internal jokes. It's a really nice tool, it's 110% botnet, but it's convenient. And convenience is a high priority for many, except maybe for some people in the tech field.
Go add 1+1 and you get all those OSS projects that use Discord instead of IRC.
