WHAT
THE
FUCK

As a former VGA man now, is this safe?

I dont know about ethernet but i connected my laptop to the tv with an hdmi cable...

I know, that's the point. But these cables have ethernet built in. Why?

Physical connections are not the same as logical connections you fucking retard.
Video can be carried over HDMI, but also ethernet and USB-C. Likewise, ethernet can be carried over HDMI and USB-C.

Fun fact, VGA uses a D-sub connector so technically data can be carried over VGA such as RS-232.

What does common sense tell is?

I kkknow that nigger but why the FUCK does a HDMI cable need ethernet?

Smells like botnet to me

Its a standardized connector that is cheap and in mass production
Why use HDMI connectors instead of actual ethernet jacks? Maybe because you like the physical connection better, or maybe its simply because HDMI carries data better with less packet loss as a side effect of its original design as a means of carrying HD video content.

Its a cable

You guys are idiots, the HDMI display standard includes basic input and networking.

Thanks for repeating what we have all been fucking saying?

I don't use HDMI in my computer because the standard has DRM built into it.

But adding in ethernet to the cable makes sense for all those smart televisions that are streaming video or for when televisions are used as displays in large open areas.

No, You're talking about pushing 802.11 through a physical HDMI port, which of course is possible as it's just wires.
But the HDMI standard itself has networking, video and input all working at the same time through one cable.

Yeah, and the receivers all mux the network data...

Just wait until you learn about power over Ethernet. Your mind will be blown all over again. Fucking Nikola Tesla himself couldn't even imagine this shit if he were alive in current year.

...

Does this mean my ps4 has been sending all the microphone data and shit back to hq even though ive never plugged in the ethernet cord?

If your TV is plugged in to ethernet or wireless and your PS4 is plugged in via HDMI... Maybe!

Like, fucking, seriously? Ugh? Shelly is SUCH a bitch.

((( )))

have I made a huge mistake?

I bought a monitor yesterday, Benq GW2280 and it had two choices - DVI or HDMI. I chose HDMI.

Is 1080p DVI different than 1080p HDMI?

They are identical. HDMI is compatible with DVI to the point were adapters are simple cables without any electronics.

They send the exact same signal, DVI lacks the DRM though.

dang it

This to be honest.

Is there a way to strip that functionality from the cable, the same way you can keep devices from turning each other on/off by running one side through an adapter that drops that signal?

WARNING: Amazon Cloud™ Has detected you are attempting to send copyrighted content over HDMI™.

Gosh, I wonder what 2019 will bring...

might as well just upgrade to a fucking nvme or a new sata port next time.

Aside from that nugget of stupidity, HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC) is a completely separate cable from a standard HDMI.
You haven't been botnetted unless you bought the wrong cable like a retard, a cable which has a different name and thus wouldn't stand out to you.
Added to that, you'd need the functionality to spy built into every fucking television, game console since the 360/PS3, DVD/BluRay player etc. I doubt in all the years since HDMI was invented and those devices torn down, no one managed to find the code that transmits data throught the HDMI cable.

Then again, most of the anons here hit the bunker instead of taking 10 seconds to search the topic for answers. Maybe you all deserve the botnet.

Faggot.
DVI and HDMI are the same signal, so you're clearly making up shit for fun. Copy pasting your sentences yields a fucking AOL exploit from a decade ago.

Also, what the fucking is plaintext screendata? A HDMI cable only transmits the image; it doesn't render the text so unless every HDMI cable has a built in text interpreter, this is bullshit.
Or does it make a giant fucking ASCII art of the gay midget porn you watch?

Craft your bait better.

Wrong
You can have 100m UTP cables without worrying about any major loss, any HDMI beyond 3 meters is going to need a signal regenerator.

Thanks for being a bastion in the sea of Zig Forums stupidity

It doesn't. You can carry anything through any cable as long as it's electrically compatible.
Also, HDMI has lots of pins available to use and its quality is high because it needs to be able to carry tons of data over distance of an entire room, sometimes more.

Why HDMI to begin with?
Just use DVI or Display Port.
If you're not a TV fag, you normally don't have low quality loudspeakers in your monitor.

like what said but use DVI.

Is Display Port any good, or is it fucked too for some reason? I always used VGA but I like the idea of combining video and audio into one cable and using shitty built-in speakers on a monitor to save space. It would make moving easier.

...

Not a good Idea. It's simply a shitty idea as a whole, solely propagated by the TV industry.
Analog can give you stupid artifacts and color inaccuracy.
Depending on your pixel count and framerate use DVI or Display Port.

DisplayPort is even more fucked because it's advertised as an open VESA standard but then HDMI patent parasites started extorting royalties out of it for having something vaguely similar to their DRM

The last good connector standard was DVI.

The good thing about VGA is there's lots of cheap monitors on places like craigslist. Even better, most of them are 4:3 ratio. After being stuck with two laptops with widescreen shit (16:10 and 16:9), I'm looking forward to get a real monitor again.

OP probably doesn't even know that audio can be transmitted through the power lines in his mom's house.

the physical connections can do whatever they want, i recall a game company using hdmi for adapting multiple types of game controllers because it has a bunch of pins & it's a standard

Well there are limitations based on the length and composition of the wires, and the connectors themselves. Try shoving more than 2W through a microUSB "power cable" and see what happens. Also here's a fun video with melting wires:
youtube.com/watch?v=n70N_sBYepQ

I mean 2A, which would be 10W @5V.

It's so the two devices can communicate. If you tell a movie to pause through the TV remote it came send it to the HDMI source.

Yes it's safe. It's also not very fast but it's good enough.

Fucking hipster dinosaurs

VGA gets me 1024x768 or even 1280x1024, and that's really all I could ever need. Anyway I always hated widescreens, ever since the industry started forcing them down everyone's throat.

Fucking hipster. I bet you're using a 16:9 or 21:9 monitor with the secret mind control patent which makes you addicted to games whenever that certain "color signal trigger's" received by the monitor the same way Braun tube televisions made baby boomers fuck like rabbits. Enjoy your demise and your botnet literal goyim NPC. >>>/v/ >>>/g/

look for 1600x1200 , 2048x1536 , or a 2560x2048.
most widescreens are trash and have terrible viewing angles top-down so manufacturers decided to only extend left-right till the end times and get away with making low height cheap shiny lcd sheets with slow as fuck response time and cheap PWM flickering backlight controller.

Flay yourself you piece of genetic reject.

DisplayPort MASTER RACE

DVI is quite alright tbhfam.

That's misleading and inane user. I remember the NSA leaks which confirms what that user said about display signals leaking out if the cable isn't noise-suppressed. Sadly most cables these days do not have that dangling 'magnet' thing to suppress outgoing-incoming signal-noise and it is illegal for manufacturers to sell them due to the revised FCC standard.
NPC isn't of pol but you are obviously an NPC.

They could even do it without these implants by tuning to the right frequency and removing background noise. Notice how that cable doesn't have the 'magnet'?

Attached: 011114_1441_HowtheNSAMo2.png (413x312, 177K)

...

Noise is purely trash signal. They have way better methods than analyzing fucking powerlines for them. Post source or fuck off.
Also, there ARE HDMI cables with noise suppressors, not to mention standalone noise suppression clamps available for HDMI cables, you inept retard.
Originally fromcuckchan but it's been cultivated into what it is the most on Zig Forums. Stop misusing it, dumbass.
A dumbass and a newfag to boot. The only NPC here is you for being a luditte instead of researching workarounds for problems.

It's not ethernet per se, but there are data lines in hdmi cables. It's how things like CEC capable TV remotes work, so you can, for example, use your TV's remote to control Kodi running on a raspberry pi. It could possibly be used for nefarious purposes, but only insofar as sniffing the data going between your TV and whatever connected device - not even video or audio data, but the raw 0s and 1s that your TV's remote sends to the TV and then on to the pi (sticking with the example above).

Unless one or more of the connected devices is backdoored, in which case anything is possible. But that goes for literally everything.

HDMI is fucking bloat for ipodniggers

CEC is bloat too, DDC, EDID, and DisplayID
fun fact, some CRTs had their EDID overwritten because they're shitty bloated implementation made it so the computer could write to it over the VGA cable

LCDs have shitty crystalline looking shit deposited all over screen and you can't see shit. It's literally 10x worse than the noise of a VGA cable. Looking at a plain white screen on any CRT with VGA looks crystal clear compared to any LCD with digital connectors. Not to mention LCDs are unable to display motion content.

5:4. 4:3 is rare for LCDs. 5:4 is more square though

Name one reason why DVI is inferior to whatever you think is better than it, you can't.

I can get 2560x1536@79Hz over VGA or 1024x768@151Hz and that's just using the manufacturer recommended settings.

It's MPEG LA that's doing the extortion

kys already

It's much easier to do for analog signals like VGA than digital ones. In fact, you could build yourself a black-and-white VGA radio emission capture widget for less than $200 in parts if you know what you're doing. The hardest part is synchronising with the signal pixel clock, since that isn't feasible to capture. You need to reconstruct it from the signal itself.

omg we are doomed

Disgusting.

Is there a way to disable DRM / Ethernet capability in HDMI?
Yes:
1. break off Pin 14 and Pin 19 from the connector.
2. use DVI-D or DisplayPort instead (passive cable adapters are available)

There's flat panels that can be pretty shitty with HDMI cables. Most I'd seen doesn't even reproduce pitchblack and see lots of static noise. It's probably picking up too much interference from the neighboring computers.
The noise could be fixed by using wires with actual zinc ferrite (the big bulge) and sometimes they jew it and just put a chunk of plastic.
I noticed as my VGA cable degraded the color reproduction started to fade until it the entire signal left is just magenta so i had to replace the wire and this time I got a real zinc ferrite and it's 10x better. No more fonts shadowing or white bar ghosting

Reminded me that I need to rewrite the corrupted EDID of a fully working laptop display. Nouveau detected the corruption and fell back to 1024x720 but I'm not sure where to even start with writing edid to a LVDS monitor.
Makes sense why some CRTs are almost impossible to remove black bars

This.

It's can be easily explained as opening up an ASCII art on a notepad with zero line breaks so you just tune it with wordwrap until you see the actual image. That's really possible to do but you can easily shield your entire wires so it doesn't leak out image signals and even test it with a ___ meter. I wouldn't trust most modern displays as I don't trust modern processors. Old displays that were made before the age of surveillance are the only way to go when you're handling sensitive information. Most of displays are likely eveb rigged to transmit display data zero-effort not to mention that zombie wake backdoor they put on laptops that can turn on webcams and snoop on you (that is if you forgot to disconnect from the net). At one point this happened to my laptop and good thing I tilted my screen hinge upwards before I went to sleep. Fucking creepy. The webcam indicator was turned on it means something is accessing it (thank god they fucking used led for activity).

HDMI was a mistake, it shouldn't have been introduced in the first place. DisplayPort should have been the one and only DVI successor. Now you can easily end up with say a graphics card which has HDMI but no DP and a monitor which has DP but no HDMI, and you have to use shitty converters (or cables which have integrated converters and different plugs on each end).
