Puppy Linux will do. It's around 200 MB in size and loads itself completely in RAM. It's a great choice for older hardware.

I never really tried installing Linux from scratch the last time I tried to install something I had to compile myself which was gentoo it took forever and the site was going under a service denial attacks at the time so after it was done compiling I couldn't download all of the files And after that I gave up

Try KNOPPIX live CD distro about 700MB.

... I ran it on a 700MHz AMD cpu with no hard drive and a 640 x 480 hp monitor 24 bit color depth. Overall it was good, but some scripts required a rewrite and/or tidyup, and there were some issues with drivers (my soundcard e.g.) and wrong defaults for cursors etc. But nothing that couldn't be fixed with some effort. If you have suchlike hardware, KNOPPIX is just the ticket, it was the original linux live CD distro.

Also consider dumping a bunch of *buntu isos and burning a RescaTux/SuperGrub disk.
Booting a live iso is way faster than an actual installation, and boots on machines that don't support usb boot.
