Any distro that'll fit on a CD.
Debian, Arch, and netinstall images. Maybe even a BSD or or ReactOS and Haiku.

LFS takes a lot of space to compile.

Puppy Linux will do. It's around 200 MB in size and loads itself completely in RAM. It's a great choice for older hardware.
