Isn't it meant to be a war drum style thing? Seems weird to try to get a proper tune from it and play it as a purely musical instrument.

Yeah. imagine being a Roman soldier marching through the countryside on a misty morning and then hearing that sound in the distance.

Love it tbh. It does sound terrifying and associating raids and warfare with it would make it even more so.

Obviously it could be propaganda and they might have used it for signals and stuff like that as well.
