I'm not a gentoo user, but last time I checked, probably a year ago it consumed 500MB of ram, don't know about how it handles compilation though. Also gentoo is not Windows 10 or Ubuntu with Unity, so guess it'll work.

You can compile gentoo on another machine, then move it over. You don't local compilation for daily usage.
