syrian warlords. syria isnt a clean cut state force in this war. while the army and special forces that conduct major offensives and operations are under the baath command, most of other armed forces are militias, contractors and regular gangs.
in that area you had the republican guard (elite troops), but they were redeployed after dierezzor was liberated and the hero general killed by US mines near Raqqa.
then there were the National Defense Forces (national guard reserve troops) but theyre for bigger operations.
its more likely that either a local defense company (that control local oilfields and are run by people close to the baath party) hired them.

well theyre not there for the ideology, atleast not entirely. alot of russians join paramilitary and PMC organisations because it pays better than the Ru army that they served in.
