It's a difficult industry to get into nowadays. There's more competition and complexity so the barrier to entry is much more pronounced, (unless you get a job at an agency to learn the ropes and then strike off on your own). Back when I started, it was mostly dudes working from their basements and there weren't as many people hawking ads so you were pretty much able to just throw shit out there and turn a profit almost immediately.
