The Opium trade dates back to the first "Corporation" or co-operations. The thing that people don't understand about the opium trade is that opium poppies will grow almost anywhere. It's not a delicate, temperamental plant like coffee or pineapples; it grows wild in many places in the United States. The real issue with opium isn't the land to grow it, it's the labor required to harvest it.
Opium is the sap from the pods of mature poppy plants. Most varieties of poppies produce opium, the exceptions being California poppies and Oriental poppies and a few related cultivars. Harvesting this sap must be done by hand. The pod is gently scratched; too deep, and the poppy dies after the first harvest. Too shallow, and the sap won't come out. The poppy pods are then left to bleed overnight. The next morning, the sap is scraped off the pod and collected. This process can be repeated two or three times before the flower dries up if it's done correctly. As you can see, this is a labor-intensive process. Afghan opium workers only make a pittance for their labor. Growing the same poppies anywhere else would cost a fortune come harvest time. The real issue, therefore, is cheap labor rather than arable land.

The British opium trade was about addressing trade disparities with China and the threat of Chinese economic policies destroying global trade. Not even joking.
