How do I become smart enough come to my own opinions about philosophy. What is the best introduction, there is so much jargon, and variation, in wording, and context throughout the history of philosophy that I can't really say anything for sure about any philosopher that has not been made obvious.

I think Peterson gets bashed improperly. He is first, and foremost a teacher of philosophy, then a philosopher. The context of his guidance should be seen as self-help that could you use philosophy but mainly is just information that is strictly practical, rather then theory. He is a self-help lecturer, that is one of his jobs. Though, in response to the obvious nature of " clean your room " and " don't do bad things " I think it is his response to what he thinks is a lack of fundamentals that use to be common to society. I mean gender, is something that is looked at with skepticism now, why wouldn't he say this obvious shit like it is profound. It is amazing how such small shit can be disregarded as vital to progress, and he talk about this. He says that it's silly things, the small things are what we need to do first, we need to be humble and see how little structure is in modern lifestyle. Though, I will say this, to the extent he thinks that these are foreign to modern society may not be as great as he thinks, but they are close is my opinion. Clean your room, is not philosophy it's self-help advice, that he backs up with information he gained as a philosophy teacher.
