These are interesting points. I think one of the biggest contributors is the fact that our whole culture in the west is built around the pursuit of comfort and happiness rather than virtue. Sure, I think you might be right in some respects. There are aspects of both Orwell and Huxley in the world today, and the latter was far more about using sex as a means of control.
