Why is it a distraction? There are issues that are as important, maybe even more important, but that doesn't mean that everything else is a distraction. Priorities matter, but it's generally a good idea to focus on the things you are most passionate about and where you do the best job.

The Wall was a symbol of stopping immigration. Since Trump isn't doing that, the symbol loses its meaning.
