Gotta be careful though, a lot of the Sagas were written centuries after the fact, and with a certain political goal in mind. Snorri Sturluson wanted Iceland to become a part of the Norwegian kingdom and deliberately wrote it so there was a greater similarity between the Icelanders and the Norwegians, for instance.

Written tales can be corrupted, oral tradition has built-in integrity and error correction, namely if a jew attempted to rewrite your history, it would be instantly corrected by all the other living holders of the text.
The one attempting to corrupt the history would be instantly punished, probably with death.
Writing is a crude abstraction of living speech, and always inferior.
