This tbh, in the cold war you could defect, in WWII you were fighting fash.
People call Putin Hitler, no he is Kaiser Wilhelm II. We are heading towards another WWI and after every 1914 there is a 1917. Joining the Red Cross is the best option IMO because 1) you aren't a "traitor" 2) you aren't a "coward" 3) you would have made sure people get home alive 4) you don't help the war effort for either side 5) you can talk shit to all the politicians that sat back and sent people to war..
Regardless, if a war started we have an entire generation that would not fight it: they're either leftists or actually sympathise with the Russian regime, you'd be sending unwilling soldiers off to war, which is unlike WWI.

Also to make the point, I wouldn't volunteer to join the intelligence services, my native understanding of english and (although currently basic) ability in Russian would mean I would likely be conscripted into it.

WWII was not about "killing fash" for the US and Britain, it was about rescuing the remaining German fascist-imperialist apparatus from total Soviet domination (IE prevent Soviet takeover of the whole of Germany).

In the event of a nuclear war all major population areas, cities, and military bases will be wiped out. All infrastructure will be wiped out.

If you somehow survive then you will live in a world were nothing no longer functions, no electricity, no modern society. The fallout will rain down radiation onto the land making it impossible to grow food and poisoning any animals or humans.

If there are any humans left they will run out of food and the final days of the human race will be fought with sticks and stones between various survivors trying to eat each other

I join the army and fight to gain training/experience and also the social/political clout that comes with being a veteran. Do you think anybody will give a shit about what you have to say after the war if you sit it out? As soon as they realize you didnt fight you will be persona non-grata. If you want to have a political future after the war then you will fight.

It's literally what the original IRA did. Battle hardened Irish veterans came back from Flanders and immediately launched the Irish War of Independence. You can also use the opportunity to subvert the military by spreading socialist ideals among disgruntled soldiers, both the Bolsheviks and Spartacists did this.
