Most economists did not accurately measure Soviet production because it did not align with their standard practice of nominal value. Unsurprisingly, after their currencies were freely convertible into dollars, nearly all services were paid for with cash now, and after they recovered from the greatest economic collapse since the Great Depression that showed up in the calculations.

The Soviet Union was the second largest economy from probably the late 30s all the way to the late 80s. Most economists during the Cold War considered the East bloc to be developed nations that were "second world" even by the most pessimistic evaluations of the data.
